The legal mat ters pertaining to the paving will now be rushed in accordance to the wish of the majority, and it is hoped that all arrangements can be made to start actual paving some time eurly in May. VERNONIA BOYS MAKE GOOD BASKETBALL AVERAGE Basket Ball Season Ends The St. Helens basket ball game concluded the basket ball games for the year. This years team wasa good t one and though they had some hard luck they ran up a larger score than their opponents and probably a lar ger score than any team in the dis trict. Below is a brief record °f the games played: Vernonia 14 15 Scappoose 9» Rainnier 23 0 99 31 14 Hill M. A. 99 St. Heltns 14 12 99 8 Clatskanie 31 99 15 10 Scappoose 99 31 Clatskanie 12 99 8 Rainier 11 99 19 31 Hill M. A. 20 24 St. Helens 168 184 The fact that Vernonia did such good playing at the end of the sea- son and that only one player will be lost should mean a winning team for next year. What Would You Like to Know - If you want to know how to read, read Ruskin. If you want to know what to read, read Ruskin. If you want to know whether or not you are a true Christian, read Ruskin. If you want to know whtre the laborer gets his amusement, read Ruskin. * The Senior English class are find ing the answer to all of these ques- » tions and many others by reading Ruskin’s “Sessame and Lillies.” The prises for the best salesman in the Country Gentleman campaign were given out last Wednesday. Jessie George, with seven subscrip tions and Alma De Hart, with six, headed the list and each renewal a miniature fountain pen. Each of the following students obtained three subscriptions , and were awarded 'automatic pencils: Amy Hughes, Lena Wiles, Anna Henkelman, Dor othy Watts, Ida Mae Hawkins, Cleo Siemons, Velden Parker and Dudley Spencer. The school made about forty dollars which will be used for athletic equipment. The two losing teams will give the winning (Katsen- jammer Kids) a feed next week. Some Student’s Expression of Peter AMERICAN LEGION • PLAY BALL EASTER NEAR Columbia Ciunty Logionairs Got Together St. Helena members visit Ver nonia Post. Fourth of July cele bration discussed. As per agree ments of the various Chamber of Commerce, St. Helens, Vernonia, Rainier and Clatskanie. It falls on St. Helens to celebrate 1025. The Vernonia Post is asked by the St. Helens Legion to help and assist in the big national day celebration. American Legion, St. Helens, will put on a celebration assisted by the various Posts of Columbia County. Vernonia Post allowed concess ions and invited to be represented by Drum Corps and members of the Post. Comrades J. C. Uriea and Mr. Donald praise Vernonia Post from every angle. They say we are alive and out for the betterment of the community at large. Scanty Sense Solemn ceremonies followed the regular meeting. The Royal Baboom’s ascention to the throne was the most gorgeous affair ever witnessed “North if 36.” After being seated, he stretchel out in luxurous tase. His subjects, the flying apes, loyally stood attention until given the command of “REST.” “Hinkey dinkey pollez vou,” just us the song ended some 43 members of the flying apes struggled to their feet, and stood at attention, for no one else but the Royal Baboom him self was to address the gathering. His address or speech was won derful, so wonlerful that it give me the willies to even think about it. The only thing I can now recall from his speech was that, "A cat has nine lives, but a frog croaks every night.” The spagetti, served by chef-de- gare. Shields, was excellent, but some of the smaller apes found dif ficulty in swallowing same on ac count of sand speget getting caught in their tonsils. Th e swan dance followed the baanquet, with an oriental twang, the orchestra opened up with a selection from “Logengrins,” rasp berry, and under a full moon the dancers whirled forth, swaying gent ly to the music. Their steps were original, in fact too original. Sim ply gorgeous were the costumes. The pink gorilla gushej all over himself so tickled was he with the dance these babies pulled off. Only he queered the detail by trying to borrow ten berries from one of the dancers, a few minutes after the dance was over. One might ask, “Are these flying apes intellectual?” Then one can judge by the reavy literature which thep read during their spare min utes at the LEGION HALL. Such books on psychilogy and psycho analysis and books by Wehawkin, which deals with the fur traders crimes, before the war of 1912 period. I do not believe there is such an active post, any where else in the wold, as that of the American Leg ion Post-119, Vernonia. We believe and know our country is the beat; that Vernonia is a good town to live in, and that we wish to help keep it so; that the American Legion, as the friend, the champion of all ex-service men, and has the welfare of the community at heart The Legion argues principals, not details. Those principals are based on a convictjon of a national need. They are bound to win. Rue de la Paix. youg always ad have fun, the fun that only youth knows. Youth is unmarried by thoughts of the ma terial world and the things it holds. The fight that the children had with the pirates, although it is very impossible, gives us a very good illuaration of youth and righteous ness conquering over age and evil. This shows us that there is something besides manual strength in winning fights. The same thing I would think, would apply to all life’s fights and battles. • » SCHOOL NEWS ______ e ATHLETIC MEET The school is elated over the fact LOWER COLUMBIA TRAK that the district track and field AND FIELD MEET Bring» Promise of Hope meet is to be held in Veminia.
