Carroll) Tillamook county’s road organi zation is taking advantage of the good weather and operations are go ing full blast in all parts of the county. Although greatly handi capped by continuous rains until Ju ly the 2nd, the vast throng of tour ists found our roads in fair shape on July 4- Signs placed throughout, the county calling attention to danger ous curves and speed regulations served their purpose in keeping ac cidents at a minimum. Visitors to the celebrations in the north end of the county found the roads well dragged, and many took advantage of the condition of the Nea-kah-nie road and drove up the mountain as far as the rock bunkers A steamshovel is completing the grade between Nehalem and Todd’s place. The concrete work is com pleted on the Scovell bridge across the north fork of the Nehaleip and operations are tied up pending the arrival of the steel for the span. The new county warehouse at Ne halem is finished and is indeed a credit to the community, AH cottn- ty equipment itill be under oever next winter. Comstock Logging Road Out Residents and travelers on the Fo- ley heaved a sigh of relief when they saw the plank logging road be ing removed. The Comstock Log ging company failed to comply with the requirements of tbe county and county forces proceeded to ' remove all the plank. Brush and weeds are being cut along the Foley and Miami roads. Haddon quarry is operating, fur- nishing rock for concrete work near Tillamook. The completion of the plank road to Manhattan has boomed that place. Everybody likes to go to the end of the road. Many new houses I are being built there. Attention Is being given the old plank road all along the bea/th and it is in fair condition. Drivers not broad enough beTween the eyes to stay on the two plank road from Watseco to SaJtair will be relieved to see gravel being placed there next week making a 12 foot surface to travel. Danger Seen In Bathing Suits Signs should be placed cautioning drivers to look straight ahead when crossing Barview lake as there is a thickly populated bathing * resort there and the drivers attention is necessary at the wheel. Gravel operations in the Miami river are completed, the new road be tween Hobsonville and Bay City is now open to travel, thus eliminating the steep plank road north of Bay City. Two bad curves are being élimin ated at Garibaldi, a crew ât the present time is cleaning the new cut off between Garibaldi and the Cove. Ice cream booths and other ob structions were ordered removed from the county road thru Rocka way for at that place it is only about 30 feet wide and the traffic needs most of that room. All buildings were ordered remov ed from the park at Rockaway and a set of rules governing the park will be established by the county court with the co-operation of the Rockaway community club. Bay City Road Soon Complete Two weeks of good weather will allow the completion of the gravel- !ng from Riverdale through Bay City connecting with the gravel hauled from the Miami rWver. This Kravei is being hauled from Kilchts river where a dragline and crusher outfit has been installed. Five men can put 150 yards of screened gravel in the bunkers per day. The seam shovel operating at the Kilchis river bridge will be thru next week at that point and will go to the Bayocean road. The Wilson river plant Js busy turning out patching material and also material for stockpiles for the winter. When haying is over arrange ments have been made with numer ous local team owners to get busy on the various side roads to put them in shape for the winter. ..The new bridge is completed over t->e north fork of the Trask and other bridges have been repaiied. Considerable work on the Trask rlv- «r road has put it in the best shape it has ever been. (Concluded on page eight) I A survey of tuberculosis confii tions in the county is being made by Robert W. Osborn, representing the Oregon Tubeculosis association and the State Board of Health. H Rosenberg is president With chairmen In each town in the county and outlying districts handled by school children, the club will probably direct the sale of pen ny health stickers on a coun'fy wide basis this year. Mr. Osborn reports that the tu berculosis situation in Tillamook county is above the average. The number of deaths from the disease during the last three and a half years is sixteen and the number or living cases in this district, with the survey uncompleted is twelve. The Oregon association has held a num ber of free tuberculosis clinics in the state this year which have re- suited in early treatment for many who need it. 9 1-2 HOURS TRIP MADE TO SEATTLE What is believed to be record time by automobile between here and Se attle was made this week in a Ford car by Oren W. Dixon, Exide battel y expert of the Tillamook garage, anu Ed Heisel, also of the garage. The car, which is a stock model with the addition of special body, sixteen valve head, disc wheels, etc., is the property of Dixon. At Kelso the party had the mis fortune to roll over a thirty-five foot bank, causing some time lost in mak ing repairs. Two of the disc wheels were lost during the trip. The distance to Seattle is about 320 miles and was covered in 9 1-2 hours running time. The boys took {he Seaside road going out and re- turned by way of Sheridan. POTATO BLIGHT CURE IS GIVEN (By W. D. Pine, Co. Agriculturist) The disease that 1 b affecting pota toes in Tillamook is the Black Rot and Blight. The Black Rot is a rot starting with a grey fungus growth at the base of the vine where it first starts from the ground. Later it turns black and eats up through the stem and eventually kills the plant, The liability to this disease could have been avoided extensively at the time of seeding by disinfecting the seed with the following solution. Mericuric Chloride (corrosive sub limate) 4 oz; water 30 gallons. S'ak the potatoes in this silution from one to one and one-half hours and dry before planting. * In order to control the Blight, spraying of the potato plans must be frequently resorted to. For this pur pose Bordeaux Mixture has proven to be the most efficient spray mix ture used, of which the following formula is most frequently employed and best for potatoes: Copper sulphate, 5 lbs., lump lime 5 lbs., water 50 gallons. Dis solve the 5 pounds of bluestone In 25 gallons of water by suspending It in a sack near the top of the wa ter over night as it dissolves slowiy. Slack the lime gradually in a small amount of water and dilute the milk of lime to 25 gallons, then pour »he two solutions together and stir vig orously. This should be strained be fore using. This applied to your po tatoes will not kill the blight al ready affected but will prevent the spread of the idsease to other vines belonging to you and your neigh bors. The Union Oil company of Cali fornia la building a plant in Tilla- mook which will be completed in the near future. It is reported the new plant will employ several per sons in the office and more for the outside work. The new plant will help a great deal in time of gaso line shortage in Tillamook and vi cinity.
