The | first business taken up was a peti-I tion from certain resident» in the south part of town to have a s'reet opened. The petition was laid over until next Council meeting awaiting the completion of a map giving the 1 location of each residence in that section of town. I A petition for the purpose ot for bidding the running of a skating1 rink at Second Street and First Ave nue West was also laid over. Con siderable time was spent in inves tigating the condition of sidewalks. Mayor Harter brought up the dilap idated condition of some sidewalks, Councilman Knudson the condition in the south end of Stillwell Ave nue and Second Avenue East and Councilman Maddux the need of : sidewalks in Sunnymead. The Chief of Police was advised to order a sidewalk built to the city ■ limits on Stillwell Avenue and Sec- I ond Avenue East and to order all sidewalks repaired. The matter of new sidewalks was referred tojthe street committee. Councilman Knudson brought up the matter of the filthy condition of alleys and certain barns and restaurants and Chief Ranea was Brick, Lime, advised to work in connection with Cement, the City Health officer and condemn Shingles, all unclean places and have every Coal Oil, thing cleaned np. The debating teams of the Tilla- mook Hfgh School consisting of Benly Stain and Joseph Bain de- feated the McMinnville debating team in the inter-scholastic debate which was held in the First Presby terian Church last Thursday night. The decision wan unaminoiis. This was the third time that the date for the debate had been set and as Supt. W. R. Rutherford of the McMinnville schools had other ap pointments for the last of the week it was necessary to hold the debate Thursday evening. Vnceriain rail road transportation was the cause of the former post ponements of the contest. Harry Stuart and Homer Stuart, the McMinnville debaters, together with Mr. Rutherford arrived on Thursday's train. They were met by representatives of the High School and taken to the home of T. H. Goyne where they were euter- tained until the debate. The contesting teams took their places on the platform at 8 o’clock with John Aschim as chairman of the debate. As soon as the judges, Attorneys S. S. Johnson, IL T. Botts, I and John I.eland Henderson, had been properly stationed in the audi ence, Mr. Aschim called attention to the rules for inter-scholastic de bates and introduced Mr. Slam, the first speaker on the affirmative. The question which was, “Resolv ed: That the Federal Government should adopt a parcel's post in con I nection with the prstal system, ” was very well handled by both . teams. After the debate the Senior Class, gave a reception in honor of ihe visiting team. Those present were: W. R. Rutherford. Hardware, ALEX McNAIR CO AT LOGGERHEADS Considerable trouble was caused in the High School the past wiek by he action of two or three junior« in their eifort to break up the old literary societies which were formed by Prof. Whitney about nine years ago. The leader in the affair was the trouble maker who has tried to make school life like a civil war during the past year. Tuesday night the matter of either dissolv ing the two societies and forming one new one or reconstructing the piesent societies was brought up with Benly Stain, us chairman, Read Bain and Oscar Aschim as Ihe principal opponents in the con- llict. Aschim, who has been u leader in the Ciceronian Society for the past four yearn, defended the societies. Those who were present alate tlint Aschim hud good logical argu ment, while his opposition merely made dogmatic statements without any proof, and when the question that the societies should be dis continued, was put to a vote, the negative won by a 36 to 441 vote. However, the Imockers were not satisfied and called another meet ing, and by ignoring all the parliamentary rules of order, the question was again voted upon. It was very evident that the oppo sition to the old order would win if possible and when the vote was cast, two votes were cast by differ ent members in u number of in stances, and they won by a 39 to 40 votes, Although the bribing and graft was self evident it is generally supposed that the vote will be al lowed to stand, as the chairman marie no mention of the unparlia mentary proceedings. The first semester is over and all the exams are finished. The senior, which consists of thirteen of tlie moat influential members of the High School, are, as a rule, glad that they have only four months more of high school since there is nothing of any interest in school with the societies and society com* l>etitioii dead, but possibly the freshmen will make enough excite ment so that things will not Is* en tirely dead.
