TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, JUNE 8» 1911^ i Tillamook City the Place to Trade. A serious question will soon corue tip that r will effect all our business people to a great extent if the hauling of freight from Tilla- moot continues to increase at the present rate. As it is, purchasers make a sav ing of ten to fifteen per cent on the goods hauled up by wagon from Tillamook City over the pre vailing prices in Nehalem and also have the satisfaction of having it Thia delivered at their homes, raving is made on tlcur. feed and sugar as well as other staple articles which are generally sold at the lowest prices consistent with successful business methods and therefore it ia to be expected that other goods are proportionately cheaper us the margin of profit ia greater. The cause of this ia that our mer chants pay from three to five dollars more for freight per ton than Tillamook merchants. For this reason they are at a serious disadvantage in trying to meet Tillamook prices and pay Nehalem freight rates. Of course we must admit that our bar ia not always good under present conditions and for thia reason it ia unaafe to cross at times with the Vosburg and the barge Nehalem in tow.—Nehalem Enterprise. Church of Christ. Evangelista Olson and Moss, now in a meeting at Dallas, made a Hy ing trip in here Monday, returning to their work Tuesday morning. They reported over forty additions in their first week at Dallas. The Bible school here haB under taken to reach the “Front Rank" standard. The Base Ball Games. The series of bueeball guinea which were played Saturday, Sun day mid Monday between the Till amook Commercial Club und Co lumbus Grays' was neither u suc cess for the home teams financially nor in regard to the guinea won. The first game was marked by rotten playing throughout on the purt of the club team, possibly be cause of the lack of team work. Nothing (brilliant was done by either side and the final score was 8-4 Grays. The Suuduy game was the best of uil. Clint King, the high school pitcher, occupied the box for Tilla mook mid proved himself a good clean, clear headed twister. At the beginning of the seventh innings the score was 2-2, and King held down the Portland team to that score until the eleventh, when the club boys tnude a run which finished the game with the score of 3-2 Tillamook. Portland worked two of their pitchers against Tilla mook, but to no avuil. Luke, who was on the slub during the first game for Tillamook, occu pied that position in the last gume, mid although he ia considered au exceptionally good pitcher lie seemed to hick the power of winning the game for the home team. Numerous errors were made, both in the in mid in the out fields, which probably caused the score to be ns it wus in the end. The score was 12-3 Grays, which allowed the visitors two of the games out of three. Had the home team been playing together longer so that they would have lieen accus tomed to each other the games would bine been closer and possibly Tillamook would have couie out victorious. When a b rse falls iu tbe harness his natural inclination Is to get up again. Tbe shock of tbe fall has excited him more or less, tuid lifbis effort^ to arise he may further injure himself us well as the harness. The tlrsc action should be to sit on bls bead, pointing bls nose upward with one hand, to keep him from struggling until the traces and all other attachments to tbe vehicle can be un fastened. If two persons are present this can be done without difficulty. It a horse breaks his leg tbe most humane as well as tbe most sensible action Is to shoot blm on tbe spot. It is true that cases are on record where broken legs have been success fully treated by means of suspending the horse In a sling and pulleys, but the experiments In this direction have almost Invariably met with failure To shoot a suffering animal and kill blm Instantly Is not so simple a mat ter as it at first appears, says Country Life In America. Many shots ure sometimes fired before death results. How and where should a horse' be shot? In the center of every horse's fore head a little above the line of the eyes Is a little swirl something like a cow lick. Three Inches above this swirl Is tbe exact spot to lodge the bullet to insure Its piercing the brain. Tbe I bullet should not be of less than 38 caliber. For sprains hot or cold bandages are recommended. Fomentations promptly applied sometimes prevent permanent lameness. Spraining of the back sinews is only too common and un less promptly and properly treated re sults In knuckling and other complica tions. Blistering, firing and even nerving are resorted to, but It should be borue In mind that these drastic measures are often unnecessarily tak en. Rest, turning out where practi cable under favorable conditions, and massage often effect a cure. Not Infrequently a horse will pick up a nail It Is unnecessary to say that the first aid Is to remove tbe nail. If suppuration ensue poultice tbe wound and give the animal rest until well, it may be well to remove the shoe for a time. Great care should be taken that the nail be not broken off flush with the sole and left there to fester. Horses are |>ecullarly susceptible to tetanus, or lockjaw, and a nail often causes It YAMHILL & TILLAMOOK Daily Stage Line. Shortest and Quickest Route to Portland.
