Tbe pigment is really a powder which dissolves iu water, its atreugtb may be estimated by tbe fact that it | will color 1.000 times its owu bulk. When tbe octopus has been killed tbe sack or bag is removed aud dried to prevent putrefaction. Tbe sepia is treated with ammonia or caustic soda, washed aud dried, it is one of tbe most durable of paints, except when fully exposed to the tierce rays of the suu, and an even surface can be ob tained with it more easily than with most paints.
