When tbe octopus has been killed tbe

prevent putrefaction. Tbe sepia is
treated with ammonia or caustic soda,
washed aud dried, it is one of tbe
most durable of paints, except when
fully exposed to the tierce rays of the
suu, and an even surface can be ob
tained with it more easily than with
most paints. Sepia has been obtained
from a fossil cuttlefish thousands of
years old aud fouud to be quite good
(or paint.
