During this proceee the n,rtlcles of metal become elongated alld strained, making the wire harder ,nd more brittle. To restore it to a proper temper it is necessary to heat or anneal It. Wben a fine diameter Is required tbere must tie repeated annealings and drawings. This may be done until tbe bar. which originally was four inches iqttitre and four feet long, becomes re duced to a diameter of a single tfeoa- randtb of an Inch and exteuded 13,000 tulies In length. Before so flue a size U reached the wire will cut Into the Steel Of the die plate, so tbe usual die ntatrs must be discarded aud tbe draw ing continued through boles drilled ln diamonds, tbe diameter ot these dla- moud dies decreasing by fractional parts nt a thousandth of an inch.
