If some enterprising citizen I the city was bonded the taxpayer* ave had to pay additional taxation and the insurance rates have l>een raised all over the city. It is time to quit this kind of grafting the tax payers. * < # It was seldom that a steamer left this city with a full cargo of freight, but last I i week the Argo had more freight than she could carry. It is pleasing to note this fact, for the out going freight—cheese and lumber—brings new money into the county and creates a pay roil, which the city must have Before it ever amounts to mything. Among the questions In an examina tion tn definitions in a well regulated high school In an eastern city were these: "What Is a broncho?’ "What to I ' a boomerang?" "What Is a panto mime?" "What is a cartoon?" And there four excited some most remark able answers. The following bona fide replies, taken at random from the pa pers. show In many cases decided orig inality. to say the least, but they like wise display the effect of Imperfect enunciation and pronunciation and of the association of Ideas without due regard to "sense.” In reply to the first query, "What Is i a broncho?’ were the following: A broncho Is an herb used as a medicine, a part of your body, a foreigner, a man that Ilves on ranches. "What Is a boomerang?' called forth, among others, these: A boomer ang Is a species of the baboon family, what an Indian chews, something ex plosive. The replies to “What Is a panto mime?” Included the following: A pan tomime is an animal that eats human flesh, a person who finds fault, a man I who Is always on the bad side of ev I erything. a trunk, a box to carry peo ple In. resting on the shoulders of four men; a vision of one’s former sins. As for the question “What is a car toon?” that seemed to excite the wild est Ideas of all. and there were brought forth such answers as these: A car toon Is a vessel /or holding articles, a strong windstorm, a kind of fish, a bunch of flowers presented to a hero or a nobleman, a soldier's water bottle, a statue, a strong gust of wind.—New York Tribune. At First an Ord.r For Woman Cook, Established by Louis XV. When you hear a man spoken of „ a “cordon bleu" you know he 1, , great cook, but few people have any Idea of bow and when the expreas|„n originated. The cordon bleu was at first an order for womeu cooks, it w.« eatauii»ued by a king—which makes It a real, proper order. Ixtuls XV. once asserted to Mme. du Barry that only men could cook really well. The famous beauty challenged the as sertion. but the king Insisted that he was right—that women might be all right for boiling potatoes and per forming the simpler operations of cooking, but that when it came to a work of art It took a man. Soon after this argument the royal favorite Invited the king to dinner. He praised every dish; be even ex pressed his august approval of the menu as a whole. Then bis hostess triumphantly announced to him that the entire dinner had been prepared by women, from the arrangement of the menu and the selection of the dishes to the preparation of the sauces and the sweets and the serving of the several plats. Accordingly she claimed the foundation of an order of merit for her female cooks. The claim was at once granted, and the cordon bleu was first conferred upon the women of Mme. du Barry’s kitchen. Gourmets of today would be Inclined to say that, however great the cooks of Mme. du Barry may have been In their day. the dictum of Louis XV. would be true today.
