replies, taken at random from the pa­
pers. show In many cases decided orig­
inality. to say the least, but they like­
wise display the effect of Imperfect
enunciation and pronunciation and of
the association of Ideas without due
regard to "sense.”
In reply to the first query, "What Is
i a broncho?’ were the following: A
broncho Is an herb used as a medicine,
a part of your body, a foreigner, a
man that Ilves on ranches.
"What Is a boomerang?' called
forth, among others, these: A boomer­
ang Is a species of the baboon family,
what an Indian chews, something ex­
plosive.
The replies to “What Is a panto­
mime?” Included the following: A pan­
tomime is an animal that eats human
flesh, a person who finds fault, a man

I erything. a trunk, a box to carry peo­
ple In. resting on the shoulders of four
men; a vision of one’s former sins.
As for the question “What is a car­
toon?” that seemed to excite the wild­
est Ideas of all. and there were brought
forth such answers as these: A car­
toon Is a vessel /or holding articles, a
strong windstorm, a kind of fish, a
bunch of flowers presented to a hero
or a nobleman, a soldier's water bottle,
a statue, a strong gust of wind.—New

was right—that women might be all
right for boiling potatoes and per­

cooking, but that when it came to a
work of art It took a man.
Soon after this argument the royal
favorite Invited the king to dinner.
He praised every dish; be even ex­
pressed his august approval of the
menu as a whole. Then bis hostess
triumphantly announced to him that
the entire dinner had been prepared
by women, from the arrangement of
the menu and the selection of the
dishes to the preparation of the sauces
and the sweets and the serving of the
several plats. Accordingly she claimed
the foundation of an order of merit for
her female cooks. The claim was at
once granted, and the cordon bleu
was first conferred upon the women of
Mme. du Barry’s kitchen.
