Secretary Mr. Lee, ol the Hazelwood Cream Co., of Portland, was in the city and county last week, anil was successful insecuting the output of two or three cheese fac tories. It seems rather strange, after the long and hard struggle the dairymen had in getting control ol the factories and their own business, ami having at last succeeded in doing so, that they should turn tile output of factories over to outsiders when expeiience has repeatedly shown that they can do bet ter themselves. The Long Prairie dairy, men were paid last year lor thtir cheese an average of 11.84 cents per pound. We do not know exactly what was paid the Red Clover dairymen for the entire year, but from June, when we under stand they gave thrir output over, they, from what we can learn, were paid as follows for cheese ; June 10.58c., July 11.50c. August 11.81c., Sept. 12 25c, October 12.75c. ; November 13.25c., and December we understand the pay ment will be 13 25. The following tlfri-e co operative factories, namtlv. The Tilla mook Creamery, Maple Leaf Creamery and the Clover Leaf Creamery, as will be seen on another column in this issue, received for the 8>-0,O87 poundsuf cheese manufactured and sold $104,428.42, an average of a little over 11 86c. per Hi., being divided as follows : Tillamook Creamery 11.92c., Maple Leaf Creamery 11.85c., and Clover Leaf Creamery 11.77c. Tillamook Creamery will show the highest average price for the year because they have a larger proportion ol wintei dairying than either Clover Leaf or Maple Leaf. The following is the prices received for cheese for the months while Hazelwood controlled Red Clover ; June 11.16c, July 11.98c., August 12 18c., September 12.58c , October 12 91c , November 13c. and December 13.50c. This will show that for these months Tillamook Creamery received more for their cheese than Red Clover, excepting November, when Rec! Clover was paid *4c. more for thtir cheese, Till amook Creamery being in the lead as follows : June 58)100 c., |uly 48|100c., August 37|l00c, September 23| 100 c., October 16|l()0 c., and December »4 c. This will make the following amounts in iti favor of the Tillamook Creamery ac cording to their amounts manufactured for each month : June $277.36, July $220 50, August |142.28, September $74 53, October $40.07, and Decern I >er $21.57, total $777 05. Against the Till amook Creamery, November $44.54 From the above it will be seen that the co-operatives have not been excelled in marketing their own produce. NEW TIMBER LAW BEFORE SENATE. Over 30 Years experience in the Business Committee Recommends Sale of Timber and Retention of the Land HARNESS, COLLARS, SADDLES, 4c, Washington. Feb. 6.—The Senate com mittee on public lands today favorably reported a bill repealing the limber and stoti“ act and providing that in the fu ture the Government shall retain title to its limiter lands and sell only the timber at not less than its appraised value. The committee incorporated Senator Fulton s amendment requiring that 25 per cent of the money derived from the sale of public timber shall be paid to the counties in which the sales are made. Everything Needed in the Harness Line you will find at W. A. WILLIAMS in office. Taxes pai Residents. Office opposite Post Both phones. H. COOPE| ATT o RNEY-AT-L j T illamook , M. F. LEACH, Mr. Fidton served notice on the com mittee «nine time ago thut lie would op pose the repeal ol the timber mid stone act unless one.fourth ot the receipts from limiter sales should lie paid to the coun ties lor school and road purposes, and it was in compliance with this demand that the bill was so amended. The counties will not only receive 25 per cent of the receipts from timber sales on unreserved timberland. but from sales within forest «serves ns well. This con cession to the counties is made to re imburse them for taxes which they might ultimately collect should this timberland pass into private ownership. Under the amended bill title to all tiniberland re mains in the government, hence the land itself cannot he taxed. This amendment, however, does not exempt lumber com panies and other purchasers of timber from payment of taxes on their product. Dealer in FRESH and CURED MEATS. LARD, HIDES.
