áií.*3 - TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, JANUARY 31 ---------- ,—----------------------- “ Bricktop’ is Going Home. John McNamara, better known this section as ** Bricktop,’' is again in trouble, and it is liable to prove very serious to him, and land him back in his old quarters in the pen al Salem. Wednesday night he is alleged lo have robbed several rooms in Hotel Tualatin .and carried away a sweater, silk neck scarf, a pair of pants and other articles of clothing. From the hotel, it is said, he went to the room of Roy Taylor, over Walker’s confectionary store, and "lift ed" a watch, silver match box, an elec tric pocket light Hud silk handkerchief. As he w as seen about town "taking up" suspicion fell on him at once, and several young men rounded Inm up and found some of the stolen property on bis l^rson. When McNamara realized that it was all up with him, lie took leg bail and ran to John Brown's, on Second and Baseline streets, and hid, but his pursuers were tight on his heels and soon had him captured He at once "swelled ' up and threatened all kinds of bodily punishment if they did not let him go, but it wouldn’t work. The city mar shal was found, but he would not make the arrest, it is claimed, ai.d seveial say he was in ho condition do so, I ihv - ing exhausted all his exertions on a couple of plain drunks a short time be. fore. Sheriff Connell was sent for and when lie arrived, promptly took "Brick top" to his hotel in the court house, first, it is asserted, notifying the city guardian of the peace that if he did not meander towards home lie would give him a cot out of the chilly night air. McNamara was a deputy sheriff over in Tillamook county last summer, ap pointed foi the express purpose of gatli ering evidence against " blind piggera,” and they say he was a peach. If he gets what is coming to Inm. he will take another hike to the pen—his third trip. —Hillsboro Independent. L. A. Le Miller. This church was erected in 1893. In years previous to this, Tillamook county was but a very insignificant mission and was visited now and then by Father A. J. Crochet, the well-known missionary among the Indians. In February, 1891, Rev. L. P. Demarais was appointed the first regular pastor of Tillamook, and from that date the church has had a steady growth, which now numbers about 200 in the county. The Catholics have been in strumental in bringing a number of new settlers into the county, who, for the most part, have taken to dairying and are doing their share in clearing land and improving the county. As a class the Catholics are amongst the most industrious and thrifty, and who are clearing up land and building comfortable homes, and quite a number of them are raising large families. Connected with the Catholic church are the usual church organizations, such as the Sacred Heart Building Society, Married Women’s Altar Society, Girls’ Sodality of the Blessed Virgin, Boy’s and Young Men’s So dality of St. Joseph, with a regular reading and club room, all of which are under the supervision of Father Le Miller. The Parish House was begun in 1901. St. Alphonsus Academy, conducted by the Sisters of St. Mary, is an institution which offers to its pupiis convenient access to the advantages of a good sound education. It is a splendid parochial school. The school is conducted on both the day plan and the boarding plan. Students are in attendance from all over the county. The course of study, in addition to the regular academic work, includes sewing, painting, and instrumental and vocal music. Five Sisters are engaged and the Academy remains in ses sion ten months each year. Nearly one hundred students were enrolled last year. otherwise assist any man or men whose business is unlawful or degrading to our society.
