The question for debate was: “Resolved, that as the political and com- mercial interests of the United States de mand the immediate construction of an isthmian canal, and as the Colombian government has rejected the treaty sub mitted to it, that the president of the United States should, without further delay, by treaty, obtain concessions from the governments of Nicaragua and Costa Rica and begin the work of construction at the earliest possible date.” The young orators were Herbert Cooperand George Gobar for the affirmative and Ralph Moore and Clifford Hiner for the nega. tive, all of whom are deserving of praise for the manner in which they handled the subject. The judges awarded the prize to the negative, who scored 565!4 point to that of 563 bv the affirmative. Mr. A. W. Severance, in a pleasing man ner, presented the prize, which was a set of encyclopedias given bv the school directors, Messrs. H H. Aiderman, B. L. Eddy and A. W. Severance.
