TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT. JUNE 18. General News. The tale of a »eat on the New York Stock Exchange is reported Lt $70,000. This is a drop of $13,060 from the high record of a few months ago and $10,000 below the last sale. * * * At Sneedville, Tenn., Louis Bolin, aged 60, was murdered by his 13 year-old stepdaughter, who sank the blade of ail ax into his skull. Bolin was chastising a stepson when the boy called to his sister for help. * * * Sixty Bulgarians were killed at the village at Yenij, Rounielia, recently» in a combined attack made upon it by a detachment of troops and neighboring Mutseiman villagers. Fifty prisoners were taken to Adrianople. * * * General Matos published in Curacao a manifesto addressed to the Venezuelan people, confessing that the revolution is crushed and terminated, and saying he will ask President Castro to guarantee the safety of himself and all his followers so they may be able to return to their homes and work for the peace and pros- parity of Venezuela. The announcement of this news has aroused much interest there. * M * ■ William Rafferty, a saloon loafer in one of the dives in the restricted district ofSeattle, Wash., received word that his mother had just died in Waverly, Minn., leaving an estate valued at $150,000, and that he was the only heir. Rafferty had not been seen or heard from his mother for 15 years, and thought she was dead. When the mother died an attorney came West to find the son, and located him in Seattle. Rafferty will go back East in a few days to claim the fortune that awaits him. * * * The Japanese cruiser Sokio, 610 tons, which was one of the first warships captured from China during the war of 1894-5, ran ashore May 22, during a snow storm off Shakotan, Nemuro Pro vince. The vessel does not appear to be much damaged, but is exposed to the storms. Nineteen sailors have been drowned or frozen to death. The sur vivors have sheltered in temporary huts ashore. The cruiser Katsuragi and a salvage steamer with coolies has been sent to the scene to render assistance. * * * The Canadian Pacific railway has absorbed the Canadian Pacific Naviga tion Company, with headquarters at Vancouver and has taken over its four teen steamers playing between Victoria, Skagway and other points. The new condition is an important one to all parts of the Northwest, as it gives the Canadian Pacific a through line from its eastern connections to Alaska, and leaves it in a position to be a dictator, in a certain measure, of freight rates. * * * The Weyerhaeuser Timber Company is contemplating the building of a logging road in Cowlitz county 20 miles long in order to get out the vast bodies of fine timber in that region. The estimated cost of the proposed road is $500,000. The report of cruisers are to the effect that about 2,000,000,000 feet of fine timber is standing and a good deal is in the burned tracts. Most of the timber is along the Coweman river. The road will benefit Clark county greatly, as it is tributary to the logging camps south of Lewis river. * * * Reports come from the Horse Heaven country that the wheat crop for this year is practically ruined, and hundreds of famers will be ruined financially. The hot winds that have been blowing for the last five days are unprecedented, and have cooked the young wains in the head. A rain fell Saturday evening in that country and throughout the whole Yakima Valiev, but it is doubtful whether it is in time to save the crop. One wheat-grower said that the greater part of the Spring-sown wheat would not produce more than a bushel to the acre, while the Fall-sown would do a little better. * * * What was for many a ears called the Lost Stevenson mine, in the Similkameen, has at last lieen restaked by the original locator. It was discovered 27 years ago by Robert Stevenson, a famous pioneer. The ledge was enormously rich, but there lieing no means of com munication, Stevenson could not take the ore out. In the last few years many parties have sought for the property, but Stevenson kept the secret of its loca tion very closely guarded. Now that the Great Northern Railway is going into the region, he formed a syndicate at Seattle to work the mine. It is 27 miles from Hedley Ci tv. 22 hours, Sir Thomas Lipton’s latest challenger for the American’s cup, the Shamrock III, is now lying nt anchor oft Tomkinville, S. I., where she arrived at 10:30 Monday morning in company with the steam yacht Erin that had towed her most of the way across the Atlantic, and by the Shamrock I, towed by the British tug Cruiser. The 156 men which manned the yachts and their con voys arc all well, and there were no ac cidents to mar the passage. Between Gourock and Fayal, Azores, where the steamers stopped for coal, calms and squally weather were encountered. * * * It is stated by the New York American that the Northern Securities Company will be voluntarily dissolved, and that the stocks of the Northern Pacific and Great Northern Railroad Companies will be distributed among the shareholders. In this manner the properties mentioned will be returned to their former owners. That preparations are being made for the dissolution of the Securities Company is declared by the American to have been learned on the highest authority, but of- ficials of the company refuse either to af firm or deny the statement. It is said, however, that the appeal now pending in the United States Supreme Court will be carried to its conclusion so as to es tablish the legal status of such com panies by the court of last resort. The Northern Securities Company was in corporated in 1901 with a capital of $400,000,000. Its formation was the outcome of a struggle for control of the Northern Pacific, which precipitated the stock market panic of May 9, 1901. Colored Oleo in Iowa. St. Alphonsus' Commencement. SCENE I.—MOUNTAIN State Dairy Commissioner Wright of Iowa brought suit against the Armour Packing company for selling colored oleomargarine, in the state court. There have been two trials of the case. In first trial the jury disagreed ; in the second, it brought in a verdict against the Armour people. This company has been selling oleomargarine in Iowa that was slightly colored with palm oil that gave the product an ivory color under the ole- margarine law that forbade the selling of it when colored, unless a tax of 10 cents a pound had l>een paid on it. Dairv Commissioner Wright and the producers of butter in Iowa are much elated over this decision, and while the Armour people will appeal the case to the supreme court, little doubt is felt that the decision of the lower court will be sustained. A similar case has been tried in Chicago and the decision of the Illnois court was the same. This was a case where a commission merchant had sold a large amount of this palm oil colored oleo as uncolored, the tax on uncolored oleo he. ing one-fourth of a cent a pound and the tax on the colored product 10 cents a pound. The amount that this merchant had sold was so large that the unpaid tax was $37,000. The dairymen of the country are de- termined that when oleo is sold it shall be sold on its merits and not have any boosting from coloring. There was a time when it seemed that the oleo law would not check the use of it, but statis tics show that as time goes on there is less call for it, especially when it is sold in its natural state.
