It seems that all the cheese sent to the state lair was stamped with the factory’s name, hut that sent by the Tillamook Creamery Company was not stamped. Without casting any reflections, it is hardly a fair way to award a prize if the judges are allowed to know who the makers are, for it is only natural that the judges, when it comes to deciding on points that are very close will decide in favor of those whom they are most intimately nc- quainted with or hand the honor of in structing in the science of cheesemaking. We have nothing before us to substan tiate the correctness of the report, but parties have written in here saying that the Tillamook Creamery Company was entitled to the first premium, and upon what thev base their claim is what we want to ascertain. The Nor thru Pacific surveyors reached this city on Saturday, having been in the field on the present survey from Scap poose, on the Columbia river, since last March. As we »lave previously stated, this survey is only a preliminary one to ascertain the cost of building n railroad from Scappoose through the Nehalem country to Tillamook. Bids were called for to lie opened last week for the con struction of the first 20 miles of the road to Pittsburg. From what can be gath ered, it is thought the cost of cons'ruct- . ing the road will not lie as much as it was at first roughly estimated, so on that score there is some probability of it being built. As the survey conies through a country rich in timber resources and a section splendidly adapted to dairying, a railroad from Scappoose to Tillamook 1 City would mean the introduction of many industries and a great blessing to ' the long neglected Coast counties. The surveyors will end up at this city and will leave on Saturday. It was rejMirted that the survey would lie continued to , the south of the county, but this remains to be seen whether tins is on the tapis.
