THE TILLAMOOK HEADLIGHT, JUNE 27, 1901. charters between the two ports is one dollar per thousand feet in favor of Grays Harbor. The loss thus occasioned to Tillamook shippers during about six months of the year 1900 was $7,000. The loss for I5000 mout^s present year has been practically To this absolute direct loss must be added the undetermi nate injury resultant from the refusal of ship owners to make any charters during sometimes five months in the year and period1Se<1Uellt paralyZ'ng of our lutnber industry during that One milling firm alone, the Truckee Lumber Co of San Francisco, has lost since the inception of its business $uo,ooo, by reason of difference in freights, and $275,000 through inability to obtain charters at any price Citizens of other states are directly interested in the im provement of our Bar and Harbor. Lumberman of Michigan own two hiUiun feet in Tillamook county. In New York one an a half billion is owned; in Wisconsin about one billion' in Pennsylvania one billion. California, Washington and other states al have Urge holdings in our ¡timber lands and all this capital is tied up, until our shipping facilities are sufficient to permit wholesale lumbering, anid when that time comes, all of these holders will become employers and the direct benefit to employees will far surpass anyother item of benefit to be credited to extensive improvements of this port. Lumber can not be profitably shipped to San Francisco in vessels of less than fourteen fuet draft. Vessels engaged in foreign lumber trade have a draft of from 16 to 24 feet For the fourteen foot draft of vessels there must be 18 feet of water at least on the bar, while for the foreign trade not less than 25 feet of water is necessary. As a matter of financial jus ness: The total amount of money appropriated and used upon Tillamook bay has been the paltry sum of $78,700 As against this the General Government has received from cash entries for the sale of lands within the boundaries of Tilla mook county over one half million dollars. As a business proposition: The present amount of standing timber within Tillamook County and tributary to Tillamook Bay as shown by figures of theUnited States Engi neers Department heretofore given, fifteen billion one hundred and twenty million feet. The United States then, has this amount of standing timber ns one of its wealth producing resources. The present stumpage value thereof is one and a half million of dollars. The establishmnt and maintenance of a channel across Tillauiook Bar carrying thirty feet of water opens and renders immediacy available to the commerce of the world, this amount timber. Its stumpage value then becomes fifteen million of dollars. This would be the actual value of the same amount similar timber available to such a port as Grays Harbor or C°os Bay.
