Bay and Slough Improvements.
Mr. J. G. Holcombe, government sur­
veyor, is in here for the purpose of mak­
ing surveys for the government engineers
of the bay and Hoquarton slough, which
will take him about two weeks to per­
form. We predict that the government,
to avoid the sharp turns in the slough,
will cut right through and makcastraigt
channel as near as possible. If this is
done it will enable the San Francisco
boats and other steamers to reach this
city, which they cannot do now 011 ac­
count of the sharp turns. Those who
have carefully watched events in connec­
tion with the improvement of Tillamook
bay and Hoquarton slough the past few
months must admit that this county had
some staunch friends at court. To be
candid, we trembled atone time whether
or not the rivers and harbors committee
did not intend cutting out most of the
appropriations for this coast, and par­
ticularly of Tillamook, because, it was
claimed, the commerce of this county did
not warrant so large an expenditure. It
is a fact, nevertheless, that the appro­
priation grew to $25,000, $8000 more
than was first proposed, in spite of the
desire of the committee to curtail the ap­
propriations.
Senator McBride and
Congressman Tongue were instrumental
in securing the enlarged appropriation,
and we must thank them on behalf of the
citizens of this county for the lively in­
terest and ¡lerseverancethcy displayed in
accomplishing their object. It is natu­
ral for the citizens of this county to feel
grateful, for notwithstanding the unfav­
orable conditions which prevailed, we
secured the largest appropriation ever
made for Tillamook. O11 account of the
war and consequent enormous expendi­
ture of the government, many worthy
projects were denied funds by the late
congress, but owing to the intelligent
and faithful work of Senator McBride
and Congressman Tongue an appropria­
tion was secured for Tillamook which
equals nearly half the total estimate of
the engineers for the completion of the
present project. Mr. Tongue has been
especially active and efficient in this work,
and Tillamook extends to him her heart­
iest thanks.
A Friendly Kick.

D ear S ir :—I would like to ask the
County Judge, or whoever knows, wheth­
er any road work will be done between
the North and South Fork this season.
For two years under these present road
bosses we have been left utterly in the
cold, and the road can scarcely be trav­
elled by a footman.
I don’t believe Judge Sappington knows
how shamefully we have been neglected.
If he would come up once and look over
this road, I am sure he would take
some steps to effect a change for our
betterment.
Foley people who settled that valley
years after we did this, now have a num­
ber one road. Why shouldn’t we?
