L aduone I slands The Ludronea, or Marianne isleuils are s group 1® islands iu the Pacific ocea'i belonging to Spain situated I,etween 13 and 21 'leg- north latitude; between 144 and 140 east lougilu.le. They are of volcanic origin; have a warm, healthful climate, comprise an area of 417’square miles of fertile lend. Only four, including Guam and Hots, are in habited. They were first discovered by Magellan iu 1521, and called Laslsle de las Ladrones (the thieves’ island,) on account of a strong propensity; to theft observed in the natives. In 1667 the Spaniards established a regular settle inent on Gunin, mid called Marianne island, after Queen Maria Anne. At the time of the settlement, the islands had from 40 000 to 60,000 inhabitants, who received the settlers well mid made gieat progress until the Spaniards began to attack their independence, when a war bloke out, which ended nearly with the extermination of the native».
