between 144 and 140 east lougilu.le. They
are of volcanic origin; have a warm,
healthful climate, comprise an area of
417’square miles of fertile lend. Only
four, including Guam and Hots, are in­
habited. They were first discovered by
Magellan iu 1521, and called Laslsle de
las Ladrones (the thieves’ island,) on
account of a strong propensity; to theft
observed in the natives. In 1667 the
Spaniards established a regular settle
inent on Gunin, mid called Marianne
island, after Queen Maria Anne. At the
time of the settlement, the islands had
from 40 000 to 60,000 inhabitants, who
received the settlers well mid made
gieat progress until the Spaniards began
to attack their independence, when a war
bloke out, which ended nearly with the
extermination of the native». The pres­
ent number of inluibilious is'i.ot more
10,000 and of these many have been
transferred by the Spaniards fiom Luz­
on. The principal town is San Iguazo
