cììcccnt Sanifica Dewey*» Reverence for the Flag. A story illustrating Rear Admiral Dewey’s loyalty to his men and hit» re verence for the flag is told by Richard E . Walsh, of Harvey, who was band master of the United Stales gunboat Pensacola when it was flagship of the European squadron in 1HS7. The hero of Manila was then Captain of the Pen sacola . While the boat was at Manila a num ber ot sailors went on alioie and engaged in a street brawl. An alarm was turned in, but the j.rckies succeeded in escaping to their ship*. Thu next morning the Captain of the port came out to the Pen- s rcola to complain to Cnpt. Dewey of the action of Ids sailors. “Wlint ciin I do?” asked Dewey. “Why, your men raised a riot on shore, a id you can assist me in arresting and punishing them,” was the reply. Tire American Captain was very court eous in the expression of regret that sailors of the Pensacola should be law less while on shore leave, lint could see no way in which he might assist his visitor in searching out the guilty ones. The reply of the naval oflicer angered the red coat, who said, somewhat pe remptorily: ‘‘You certainly can parade your crew before me in order that the rioters may be identified." Looking aloft and pointing to the slurs and atiipes waving at the masthead, Dewey made reply: The deck of this vessel is United Suites territory, and I’ll parade my men for no foreigner that ever drew breath.” —From the Pittsburg News. Mankind progressed from tho nso of rowboats to sailing vessels and steam ships. It is not “enmity” to sailing vessels Unit makes us travel by steam ships. It is 110 ’’unfriendly act” of a gn at newspaper against, hand pri -ses if it uses steam presses. It is no “crime” against horses if wo transport our goods by railroads. Neither is it enmity to silver nor un unfriendly act, nor a crime toward it, if other nations and our own UM gold for the transfer of value*. We will continue to use rowboats and sail ing vessels as well as steamships, just as we w ill continue to use copper and silver ns well as gold. No act of con gress could. however, give to our sailing vessels the great and almost uniform swiftness of our ocean steamrrs. Not even an international agreement would accomplish it. — D. Ochs.
