Editor of the H eadlight .
Dear Sir:—
If you knew how disgusting to us are
the quarrels of newspapers over a little
patronage, you wouldn't indulge in
them. Other people dont air their
private affairs in the newspapers. Why
should you do so? I take both papers
and kuow that you have not provoked
any of those quarrels, but can't yon bear
a little for the sake of your readers ami
for the sake of decent journal ¡am ? I
believe I represent many of your read
ers who hope that we may not have an
other dose, such as we have had, for
years. Of course your paper is your
own, and you can do as you please, but
I thought it might not be amiss
o let yon know how some Of your suo-
ribere feel.
Faithfully yours,
An Old Subscriber.

The Business End of Poetry.
The poet wrote some classic verse
Of lofty thought and feeling;
His language was both clear and terse—
Poetic power revealing.
He sentit to a magazine
For pay and publication;
Alas! the disappointment keen—
It met with declination!
He sent it here, he sent it there.
But b .on it was returning,
While the poor poet, in despair,
For reco...pcnse was yearning.
The editors refused to heed
The beauties of his verses,
And seemi ngly they’d ail agreed
To open not their purses.
The bard at last conceived apian,
And in it did not falter:
The verses he began to scan,
The final one to alter.
And in the rhymes, with that last hope
Which often moves some scholars,
He introduced a brand of soap
And made his <50!
