meeting today, afier a complete discus­
sion of all phases of the senate situation
a compromise proposition was agreed
on, to be offered by one of the repeal
senators. It includes, as the Harris
amendment, a provision for the coinage
of tlie silver seigniorage in the treasury
aiwounting to 53,000,000, and thereafter
tl>e purchase of 3,000,000 a months until
00,000,000 ounces tore purchased. This
will carry the purchase of silver over the
expiration of Mr. Cleveland’s term. This
rendition the silver men insist upon. It
relieves the treasury during the coinage
of tlie seigniorage of 18 month of further
purchase of bullion, besides making the
bullion so coined available in the treasury
assets. To meet the demands of the
East, the proposition for an issue of
1100,000,000 of 3-per-eent bonds is in­
clude«!. There is still aquestion whether
the provision for the repeal of the tax on
slate banks and the redemption of the
notes of all classes below »5 shall be
i added.
