W ashington , Get., 6 —In the senate
today Blackburn, of Kentucky, submit­
ted an amendment to the bill repealing
the silver purchasing clause of the act of
1890. It strikes out the Voorhees sub­
stitute, leaving the bill as it passed the
house, and then provides for free coin­
age of silver of American production.
The secretary of the treasury is author­
ised on the first day of each month to
establish seigniorage to lie charged for
the following month, w hich is to l>e the
difference between the market price of
silver bullion and the value after coin­
age. This seigniorage is not to be coin­
ed but to be sold by the secretary of the
treasury for gold to be used for the pur­
pose of maintaining the parity of gold
and silver.
T acoma , Oct. 5.—The last one of the
Northern i’acitic train robbers was rup­
tured this morning near Kalispell, Mont.
Four robbers were taken and a fifth malt
was with them. One robber, John Chip­
man, was killed. The captured men are:
Charles Jones, alius Kincaid, wounded;
lien Hall, alias Hen Mattocks, shot
through the thigh ami not expected to
live; ami Charles Brown. The name of
the man caught with the robla'rs is un­
known. The re]s>rt to Assistant General
Superintendent Dickinson says the men
were taken to Kalis|>ell this afternoon
and from there will lie taken to Livings­
tone for trial. The bandits can lie tried
on three charges—robbery, murder ol
two of the posse and robbing a United
States mail train. The captors will get
the 13000 reward.

S an F rancisco , Oct. 3.—The steamer
Jeanie, the tender of the Artic whaling
fleet, which arrived from Hershe] islands
yesterday, brings news that Captain
Potter, of the steam whaler Newport,
reached 84 deg., north latitude, the most
northerly point ever reached by man.
The Newport wintered at Hersliel islands,
and this summer, aided by the »pen sea.
which was particularly free from ice,
worked her way north while in pursuit
of whales to 84 deg , within six degrees
of the north pole. There the trip was
stop|>ed by ice, but it is the opinion that
had the Newport lieen supplied with
dogs and sledges, the north pole could
easily have been reached by traveling
over the ice. The Newport left San
Francisco in the spring of 1892. wintered
at Hershel islands, which is 89 deg. 59
min. north, and on the 14th of July 1893
started northward after whales

proceeded to <Mpe Rathurst and cruised
along the edge of the ice |sist Prince Pat­
rick island and then north. The New­
port was formerly a coasting steamer and
registers only 218tons
As a reward for

north, she took 25 w hales. The Greeley
expedition, which in 1882 reached 83
deg 20 min., has up to this year held
the record for penetrating the nearest
the north |s,le. The Newport will spend
this winter at Hershel island with the
rest of the whaling fleet.

The raft is 625 feet in length,
with a beam of 46 feet ami drawH 16 feet
of water. There are 3515 piles in the
raft, aggregating4,100,000 feetof lumlier.
The raft has already been constructed
and is ready to lx* towed here, but hh
the draught of water on the bar would
not permit the raft being brought over,
high water is waited for. The raft is
consigned to San Francisco Bridge Com­
pany It is not likely that a second raft
of the same dimensions will I m * built, as
there is too much ditliculty in bringing
it here.
