There arc hoiiic feature« about io Australian ballot Kyntem, an used in this state, that are very expensive and cumbersome. 'I lie law is good in the main, but needs revision badly. All is quiet at the scenes of the riots in Homestead l’a., and in the Cieur D’Alene country, the troops being in possession at both places. It is thought, though, that if non union men are pill in now, that till) trouble will begin again 11H soon as the troops leave. Some may think we have ex cecded the bounds of propriety in describing the doings of the har- lot-mongers in this city, but some plain facts couched in un-mistnk- able phraseology, is just wlitlt is needed to awaken the people to a proper degree of indignation at tho recent outrages against law and order. Senatoi J. W. M’xwell, of Tillamook, was in St. Helens on Wednesday last, looking after the interests and wants of his constit uency. Mr. Maxwell seems favor ably incl ned toward the repeal of the exemption for indebtedness law, but would not advocate such a measure in opposition to the wishes of his constituents. He is very enthusiastic over the efforts being made by the newspapers to bring about the modification of our present road system, ; ml a so < xpre.-sed n desirj to see the assessment law amended to some more satisfactory manner. Mr. Maxwell lias been a member of the Oregon Legislature before, conse quently lie may be able to secure some valuable legislation during the coming four years for which lie has been elected by Columbia, Washington and Tillamook coun ties.—-St. Helens Mist. According to the Oregon City EnterpriiHb It. It. Haya and .1. It. Markley have completed the pres ent owner book of Clackamas county and have shown up 95,000 acres of hind and 12,000 town lots that have not been assessed. the total value of which, at the lowest estimate, foots up to 8733,000, and they have received for their work 815,00 mid 1J per cent on the amount mini d, making in all 812,500. It is considered there as a good investment by the county, as the taxes collected for this year will be increased by about twice what was paid for the work, t? say nothing of what will be gained hereafter, and the assessors books can lie ke (straight. About 11*000 tiefes were found to bo doubly tissc.-seil. Ilnys mid Markley are still ut work on the Multnomah county records. -A invi*« ’a-¡¡u-i-w..» v.«JMÉjatitiiyi ’j' -r cult ‘ f JJC c*i**Ci 1*3 ii* the forni. The trouble in, that the gr:at politkml partie« hearken to the eapitaliutH and office-seeker« more than they do to the producing pop ulation. The strikers have committed some serious depredations in their fight, but they Lave been driven to desperation. War is always accompanied with disaster. The alleged high prices paid to a few skilf.’l superintendents are mentioned only to mislead. The average wages are less than 82.00 per day, end the majority receive less than 81.50. The political system that enables a few men to accumulate all the property and enslave all the bal ance of the people, is what ‘the workingmen are battling against. It isn't so much the p rticular instances as the general principles whiUi are involved. A great conflict is near at hand unless the poli ical system is rad ically reformed. This nation lias won its victories anil preserved its autonomy only with the help of the industrial classes. It would be a slim army without these peo pie in the ranks, and a formidable enemy that lias their help. i*.’L Price’s baking powders at Cohn’s Try Rising Sim baking powder, at Cohn’s. e Subscriptions for any paper published taken at Lamb’s t-f- Patronize home • industry by getting your legal blanks nt Lnmb’e.
