The Boston A<l»erti»er thinks it “some­
what of a novel happening for the repre­
sentatives of the Farmers’ Alliance to go
proselyting in New England, ns they are
now doing.” Our contemporary says that
the advent of Mr. Jerry Simpson, who is
now preaching the gospel of the fanners
to tiie staid New Englanders, “seems in­
congruous.”
Perha[>s it does. But the fact remains
that Mr. Simpson and his followers nre
making headway with the New England
voters. They have literally captured tho
country, and compelled the recognition
which has been so stubbornly denied
them by the press of that section.
The Boston Advertiser has ridiculed
the fanners' movement and refused to
recognize its strength and importance.
It has made light of the Alliance in the
south and west, mid predicted tliat tho
order would not result in goo<l to the
country. The Alliance has seemed a
small affair to our contemporary, un­
worthy of more than passing note. But
now that it lias entered the gates of New
England it seems a formidable affair,
which will not down at the bidding of a
AewH[ia|>ei', but threatens to become epi­
demic on quarantined ground. It b*3
gained the recognition it deserves, and
here it is in the Advertiser's own words:
No one will deny that tho gentlemen who
have seen fit jo inaugurate the ¡''arnnTH’ Alli­
ance movement in New England arc men of
considerable mental power and men who are
thoroughly in eurnost. They are at least en­
titled to a respectful hearing, and can speak
for theiiiselves. They represent an Important
factor in American ¡»olitir s of today, nod their
influence In the next congress wiJI be evident
in tiie legislation which that congress enacts.
Their visit to New England, tlicrcforc, is cer­
tainly an event worthy of notice, whatever
may be Its results. However much the east
may condemn the objectionable propaganda <»f
the Farmers’ Alliance, it will not do to depend
upon Ignoring or ridiculing those ckx'trines.
