Life of a MlniKapoIL'« Hoy Oozing Away unit I'hyNiclans Helpless. The gandwich men of London, enli- mated to number some 15,000, are being urge»l to combino and form a trade« union for tlio redress of their grievance» and tho protection of their interusts. It i* ¡jointed out that their average wage* range from Is. to 18d. a day, for which they have to work nine or ten hours. Nor ia this the worst, for it not infre quently happen» that these peripatetic advertisers apply in vain for employ ment three or four day» in succeaiion. Their chief complaint ia against tho con tractor, or middle mon, who, they al lege, charge double what they pay. Tho question has now been taken up by tho labor bureau cf the Salvation Anny, which liua issued in appeal to various religious, philanthropic and com mercial ujcictioa inviting them to assist in tlie movement. This body undertakes to supply bill distributors and san lwich- men at the rate of Cs. 2d. a day. the two shillings going to the men thcinrclves and tho odd ¡«.»nee toward the l«yuienl of exper. s. CORRESPONDENCE Regarding the country and its advantages invited. llig Connecticut Pumpkins. Some farmers go away from Connecti cut and nettle in the west, raying that the old elate is played out in an agri cultural way, but the Nutmeg state is still somewhat on pumpkins, or else Wulter Crissey, of Southington, is mis taken. Crisaey set out to raise pump kins this year anti succeeded. He planted eight acre« with field com and in every other hill dropped a pumpkin seed. He has just harvested the pumpkin crop, and there are 5,000 of them, as big and rouhd and yellow and mellow as the full harvest moon looked to be a week ago. Having gathered the 5,000 pumpkins Crissey hardly knows what to do with them, unless he build# them into a yellow pyramid like Cheops. The village arith metic man of Southington has done some figuring, and computes that each one cf Walter Crissey's pumpkins will make five ordinary pumpkin pies, ninl five pies multiplied by 5,000 pumpkins ought to yield pies enough to pave the whole main street of Southington. If the pies were strung along the country in single filo, tin touching till, there ought to be more than four miles of pumpkin pies. 60 the i:.::t:i< inativian calculates.—Cor.
