cad. Tillamook is in about the same latitude
as St. Paul, M nnefiota or Eastport, Maine, and
is about ns far west as it is possible to get in the
United States.
The county is 75 miles in length and about 3O
miless in breadth at the widest part, and con­
tains nearly 2ooo square miles or sections of
land, being larger than the state of Delaware
aud twice the sit of Rhode Island.
Much of the land is mountainous or hilly, but
m great part of itis coniparnti ely level, or con­
sisting oflow hills, and that which is no tillable
can mostly I k * utilized for grazing or ia valuable

several v.-lleys that are quite extensive, but

The steamer Truckee makes regular trips every
two weeks to San Francisco, and during a part
of the season other ocean steamers are put on
this line. The boats stop only al one way port.
Port Orford, as most all their loads are secured
here. The steam schooner Louis Olsen makes
regular trips to Portland and Astoria, and is
owned by Win. Olsen, a merchant of this place.
The steam schooner Augusta also makes regular
trips to Portland and Astoria. These boats often
call at Nehalem and Nestucca. Several other
steamers make occasional calls here. The
Augusta and Louis Olsen asceud Hoquarton
slough to Tillamook city.
And the streams were full of the finest fish,
They would make for a king a dainty dish,
The woods alive with boar, elk and deer,
Which the Indians killed with bow and spear.

Tillamook is pre-eminently a dairying and

grasses grow luxuriantly for the greater part of
the year, and stock require« but little feed in
the winter.

One of th« most attractive features of Tilla­
mook county is the climate. The summers are
simply delightful, being reasonably dry aud

winter is quite copious, but is not so disag
able as cold weather or bliaoardfi. *Thos« used

year. There is no healthier locality, however,
