The INDEPENDENT, July 20, 2011 From the Sheriff’s Desk… From page 18 and issue permits. In Columbia County, the Sheriff also runs the law enforcement firearms training range and the county Dog Control Office. All of these tasks require personnel – both sworn deputies, and civilian staff – to perform them. Wherever we can, we try to use civilian staff to perform tasks that do not require a sworn, law enforcement or corrections deputy. Nevertheless, any task where there is the poten- tial for a demonstration of authority and the use of force to carry out the mission of the sheriff, a sworn, trained deputy – who is well-versed in civil rights and the use of force – must be em- ployed. We employ a total of 10 uniformed law en- forcement deputies. Two are assigned to the Co- lumbia River on a grant from the state. One is assigned to narcotics on a grant from the feds. Two are supervisors and five are deputies who respond to and investigate the highest percent- age of criminal calls across the widest expanse of this county (98 percent of the land mass) of any agency in Columbia County, from the Ne- halem Valley to Apiary and from the Clatsop County line to the Multnomah County line.
