and issue permits.
In Columbia County, the Sheriff also runs the
law enforcement firearms training range and the
county Dog Control Office.
All of these tasks require personnel – both
sworn deputies, and civilian staff – to perform
them. Wherever we can, we try to use civilian
staff to perform tasks that do not require a
sworn, law enforcement or corrections deputy.
Nevertheless, any task where there is the poten-
tial for a demonstration of authority and the use
of force to carry out the mission of the sheriff, a
sworn, trained deputy – who is well-versed in
civil rights and the use of force – must be em-
ployed.
We employ a total of 10 uniformed law en-
forcement deputies. Two are assigned to the Co-
lumbia River on a grant from the state. One is
assigned to narcotics on a grant from the feds.
Two are supervisors and five are deputies who
respond to and investigate the highest percent-
age of criminal calls across the widest expanse
of this county (98 percent of the land mass) of
any agency in Columbia County, from the Ne-
halem Valley to Apiary and from the Clatsop
County line to the Multnomah County line.
