Page 18 The INDEPENDENT, February 17, 2011 From the Sheriff’s Desk… by Jeff Dickerson, Columbia County Sheriff Partnership in Conserving the Peace I have always believed that the relationship between the Sheriff’s Office and the Citi- zens we serve is the key in- gredient to our success in conserving the peace in our county. We have worked very hard at improving our cus- tomer service ethic and developing that connection with our citizens that encourages partnership and as- sistance at every possible level. This can be seen clearly in the role played by aver- age citizens in recent Sheriff’s Office arrests involving burglaries in North County. Last week, deputies arrest- ed a suspected burglar and, earlier, someone sus- pected of selling property taken in a burglarywas ar- rested, with the help of the victims of the two burgla- ries. I know that often, it takes a long time for our deputies to get to the Nehalem Valley on a call, but on one of these burglaries, both of our deputies who were working at the time, were on calls IN the Nehalem Val- ley area, and so the delay was in responding to North County from Highway 47. The call came in at 3:14 p.m., and the first responding deputy arrived at 3:56 p.m. The delay gave the suspects time to flee the scene. Later that evening, citizens in the area of 70740 Fernhill Rd. saw a suspect hiding in the bushes and called the sheriff. Again, deputies were out of position for a quick response, but the citizens held the suspect and waited for a deputy to arrive. Once the deputy was able to arrive, probable cause was developed to arrest the suspect for the Apiary Rd. Burglary.
