The INDEPENDENT, November 5, 2009 Ike Says… From page 2 deer and elk hunters, this inci- dental harvest will also de- crease. Some hunters are starting to realize the opportu- nity to hunt this apex predator and have developed some methods to hunt cougars on foot. One method is to use an electronic caller loaded with the sounds of baying hounds and then find a fresh cougar track and start running down the cougar while playing the hound sounds. As crazy as this sounds, these hunter have been successful, but you have to be in great shape and be somewhat fearless. Of course this will not work in dense for- Vernonia Police Department est, like around Vernonia. Frankly though, hunters on foot will never be able to be as ef- fective as hunters using hounds. This will be an important fight to get this ballot measure passed, it will be a fight for our heritage, if we loose this one, we will soon all be sitting at home during the fall and the small towns scattered across Oregon will be severely impact- ed from the loss of hunter rev- enue.
