crease. Some hunters are
starting to realize the opportu-
nity to hunt this apex predator
and have developed some
methods to hunt cougars on
foot. One method is to use an
electronic caller loaded with the
sounds of baying hounds and
then find a fresh cougar track
and start running down the
cougar while playing the hound
sounds. As crazy as this
sounds, these hunter have
been successful, but you have
to be in great shape and be
somewhat fearless. Of course
this will not work in dense for-

Frankly though, hunters on foot
will never be able to be as ef-
fective as hunters using
hounds.
This will be an important
fight to get this ballot measure
passed, it will be a fight for our
heritage, if we loose this one,
we will soon all be sitting at
home during the fall and the
small towns scattered across
Oregon will be severely impact-
ed from the loss of hunter rev-
enue.

Obituary
CORRECTION
In the October 1 issue, the sur-
vivors of Myra Bernice Baska
should have read: three sons, Jer-
ry Dinger, Gary Dinger, and Gene
Baska, all of Vernonia; five daugh-
ters; Delores Fowler and Fran
Fletcher, both of Vernonia, Pat Si-
monson of Prineville, Carol Boden-
hamer of Rainier, and Judy White
of Clarksville, Tennessee.

ALICE ANN ERWERT
Alice Ann Erwert, 74, Hillsboro,
died October 24, 2009. A memorial
mass was held October 29 at St.
Mathew Catholic Church in Hills-
boro.
Mrs. Erwert was born August
29, 1935, in Perham, Minnesota, to
Charles and Gertrude (Hembrook)
Sthamann. She was raised in Van-
couver, Washington, and Mt. Angel
where she graduated from Mt. An-
gel Academy in 1953.
In 1954, she married Harold
“Harry” Erwert. They made their
home in Mt. Angel before moving
to Forest Grove in 1956, then to
Hillsboro in 1965. She was a
homemaker.
She was preceded in death by
six siblings.
Survivors include her husband;
four children, Dan Erwert of Mi-
lano, Sherri Clay of Hillsboro, Julie
Lorch of Woodburn, and Brian Er-
wert of Banks; three siblings, Mary
Lou Buchheit of Silverton, Eileen
Eisenbeiz of Sacramento, Califor-
PATRICIA ANNE MCGROTTY
Patricia Anne McGrotty, 72,
Banks, died October 25, 2009. A
memorial mass was held Novem-
ber 2 at St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic Church in Roy.
Mrs. McGrotty was born Febru-
ary 11, 1937, in Brawley, Califor-
nia, to Porter and Hazel (Handley)
Norton. She was raised in Park-
dale.
In 1954, she married Alan Stahl-
necker. They made their home in
Colton. Mr. Stahlnecker died in
1978. In 1982, she married Robert
McGrotty. They made their home in
Banks. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by
her first husband; and one sibling.
Survivors include her husband;
two sons, Michael Stahlnecker of
Salcha, Alaska, and Kenneth
Stahlnecker of Estacada; one
daughter, Barbara Bunyard of Es-
tacada; five step-daughters, Cath-
erine Childers of Ogden, Utah, Di-
anne McGrotty of Tigard, Betty
Vandecoevering of Forest Grove,
Alice Losli of Troutdale, and Rober-
ta McGrotty of Beaverton; two
brothers, Robert Norton of Palm
Springs, Calif., and Jerry Norton of
Colton; one sister, Virginia Roberts
LYNN HENRY MICHENER
Lynn Henry Michener, 80, Ver-
nonia, died October 23, 2009. Pri-
vate interment has been held.
Mr. Michener was born Decem-
ber 18, 1928, in Vernonia, to Otto
and Tressie Sarah (Hickox) Mich-
ener. He was raised in Vernonia.
He served in the U.S. Air Force.
In 1951, he married Patricia
Bjornsen. They made their home in
Vernonia before moving to Coos
Bay in 1974. They later divorced.
He married Penny Johnson in
1993. They made their home in
Vernonia. He worked as a logger
and was co-owner of Michener Re-
forestation Company.
He was preceded in death by
his wife; two sisters, June and Mar-
garet; and four brothers, Jack,
Elmer, Homer and Delmer.
Survivors include his compan-
ion, JoAnn Beamish of Vernonia;
two children, Gary Lynn Michener
of Rogue River and Beth Ann Mich-
ener of Coos Bay; three grandchil-
dren; four great-grandchildren;
nieces and nephews.
Remembrances are suggested
to Hospice and Palliative Care of
Washington County or to the Amer-
ican Cancer Society.

DAISY ELAINE REED
Daisy Elaine Reed, 67, Forest
Grove, died October 22, 2009. A
memorial service was held Octo-
ber 31 in the Forest Grove Seventh
Day Adventist Church.
Mrs. Reed was born July 13,
1942, near Cornelius, to William
and Hallie (Hanson) Marsh. She
was raised on the family farm near
Cornelius. She graduated from
Hillsboro High School in 1960, then
attended Pacific University, Texas
Western University and Portland
State University. She earned three
associate degrees from Portland
Community College. She retired
from Washington County in 1999.
She was preceded in death by a
grandchild.
Survivors include her second
husband, Earl Reed of Forest
Grove; two sons, Ron Moor and
Jeff Moor Jr., both of Cornelius;
two daughters, Donna Pickelsimer
of Hillsboro, and Cynthia Wegener
of Banks; two brothers; John
Marsh of Thailand, and George
Marsh of Cornelius; 11 grandchil-
dren; and one great-grandchild.
