The INDEPENDENT, July 17, 2008 Community Raffle to help Coghill bike project Two free self-defense classes Two free classes will be of- fered in July by the American Council on Criminal Justice Training and the Vernonia Po- lice Department: Preventing Child Abduction will be the topic of the first class, on July 29, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This is hands-on course designed to teach small children the physical skills to overcome physical force used during abductions by strangers or non-parents. Geared for chil- dren aged 5 to 12 years, chil- dren must be accompanied by a parent to attend. Women’s Self Defense Training will be offered July 30 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. This hands-on course is designed to give women the physical skills needed to defeat grabs, punch- es, slaps, kicks, takedowns and weapon attacks. At the conclusion of the course partic- ipants will have the opportunity to test their newly learned skills in a simulation exercise with an instructor wearing a protective suit. No pre-registration is neces- sary. Both courses will be held at Vernonia Middle School. See Boosters at Logging Show A drawing will be held to raise money to help get Don Coghill a bicycle so he can get to Vernonia for all the school sporting events he loves so much, and to make other trips to town. The drawing will be for two cords of dry fir and hardwood mix. The drawing will be held at Lee’s U-Catch on July 26 at noon. Tickets are available at Creatures Pet Shop, Black Bear Coffee Company, Vernon- ia True Value, V&V Leather, Vernonia Sentry Market, Triple S Saw Shop, Vernonia NAPA, and Mariolino’s. The cost is $5.00 per ticket or six tickets for $25.00. Checks can be made out to Jenny DeWeber. You need not be present to win. Legion meeting scheduled July 19 A Re-organization meeting will be held by the Vernonia American Legion on Saturday, July 19, at 4:00 p.m., at the Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home on Madison Avenue. All veterans are welcome to at- tend. Free gospel concert in Woodland Ambassadors of Gospel Mu- sic will present a concert July 26, starting at 3:00 p.m., at Woodland Assembly of God, lo- cated at 360 Gun Club Road Woodland, Washington. A vari- ety of artists will perform, from soloists to groups. No admission cost, but a love offering will be taken. Con- cessions will be available for a nominal charge. Vernonia Boosters will hold their annual Jamboree bar- beque at the Logging Show this year, instead of the car show. Beginning and ending at An- derson Park, join in either a 5K Run/Walk encompassing a lap of Vernonia Lake, or a 10K Run that heads south along the Banks/Vernonia Linear Trail. Both routes are flat, fast and go through tree-lined sections of the trail, providing welcome shade and making them suit- able for first-time runners. This event is a fundraiser for the Vernonia Cares Food Bank – an organization that has sup- ported local families for the past 23 years. How can you help? Volun- teer to help with this event, be- come a sponsor, enter the race as an individual or group, or come cheer on those who run or walk. Be there at the finish line!
