Town Hall meeting on flood hazard mitigation impacts A Town Hall meeting will be held in Vernonia on Tuesday, August 19, to discuss Hazard Mitigation, Community Devel- opment Block Grants and FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. The meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Scout Cabin in Hawkins Park, on Park Avenue in Vernonia. The purpose of the meeting is to address the overall impact of these programs on residents of the City of Vernonia and Co- lumbia County who were affect- ed by the December 3, 2007, flood and related storm dam- age. There will also be brief up- dates from representatives of other community entities, in- cluding the Vernonia School District and West Oregon Elec- tric Cooperative. Additional Town Hall meet- ings are scheduled for Monday, September 22, and Wednes- day, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. Details regarding the locations Please see page 4 Two die in crash on Timber Road A Vernonia woman was one of two passengers killed in a single car crash early Saturday morning, August 2. Brandi Lee Johnston, 21, died at the scene of the crash and Trevor Sterling Brandi Johnston Krogh, 22, home town un- known, was taken by Life Flight to OHSU Trauma Center where he later died. The car driven by Kyle David King, 21, home town unknown, crashed at about 1:38 a.m. on Timber Road near Milepost 2. King was taken to Legacy Emanuel where he is now list- ed in serious condition. Tara Kathleen Gwin, 21, a passen- ger, Vernonia, was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Legacy Emanuel and released. The two fatalities were not wearing safety belts. The two survivors were wearing safety belts. Alcohol, a controlled sub- stance, and excessive speed are thought to have been con- tributing factors in the accident. Registra- tion starts at 10:00 a.m. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be sold by Vernonia Pride, or bring a picnic lunch. Coffee and cups will be provided. Past and present Vernonia residents and families are invit- ed to visit with old friends. “Vernonia Night Out” will be held August 19 at Anderson Park from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., hosted by the Vernonia Police Department. All Vernonia residents are invited to enjoy a barbeque by the Vernonia Lions Club, raf- fles, emergency vehicle tours, and police dog demonstrations featuring Vernonia K-9 Officer Krueger.
