I have been pleased and happy to be able to serve our seniors in the Vernonia Com- munity through Community Ac- tion Team, which has certainly come to the aid of many during this difficult time of crisis. And by the way, whoev- er owns the trampoline that landed in back of our building, I think that might be a swell stress reliever; think I’ll try it out! As for the New Year – it is now 2008 as you read this! Again, all the incredible help to- ward each other this past month has been humbling and heartwarming. I am sure much can be written about all the sto- ries out there. For one: Thank you to Ben Edgar for slopping his way into his business at the pet store on Bridge Street to get me some contact solution I needed (that he happened to have) as I panic-y found out I couldn’t get home that day and had to spend the night else- where – which is another sto- ry… Happy New Year…the sun is coming up! INFORMATION NUMBERS Senior Advocate...429-9112 Senior Center.......429-3912 Transportation......429-4304 20 Years ago this Month The January 28, 1988, issue of The Independent had the fol- lowing story on page 10: Anderson Park has been closed by the Vernonia City Council until mid-March, in or- der to facilitate much needed maintenance and repairs. Council member Mario Leo- netti, who is in charge of the city’s parks, first asked for a 90- day closure, but changed to the shorter period when City Re- corder Don Dunaway said that reservations had been accept- ed for the park’s use in March. Many of the recreational ve- hicle spaces in Anderson Park need repair or replacement of electrical and sewer hookups, Leonetti said, and the spaces need to be marked and num- bered. Some landscaping and tree trimming is also planned. Volunteers are needed to help with the work, Leonetti said, because the city can’t af- ford to hire all of the work done. Other tasks waiting for comple- tion are the installation of some playground equipment and construction of tables and benches. Volunteers who would like to help with the park projects are asked to call Leonetti at 429-7970. Vernonia Police Detective Jim Walters celebrated his re- tirement a couple of days early, with an open house at the Ver- nonia Fire Hall on Saturday, December 29. Over 50 people attended the open house to wish Walters well in his retire- ment. His official last day was Monday, December 31. Walters started on the Ver- nonia police force in October of 1982, when Sharon Ashcraft was the chief of police. Now, af- ter 25 years, Walters says he plans, “to take a month off, then see what I feel like doing.” Join CERT now to get free training The Vernonia CERT has scheduled a disaster prepared- ness training course starting Thursday, January 17, at the Scout Cabin in Hawkins Park, and continuing on consecutive Thursdays after that.
