Page 14 The INDEPENDENT, June 21, 2007 EAA gathered at airport last week Williams takes 6th and Cota takes 2nd at the races By Randall Henderson If you looked up in the sky on the evening of June 14 you might have noticed a little more activity than usual. That’s because the Experi- mental Aviation Association, Hillsboro chapter, held an im- promptu gathering out at Ver- nonia’s airport. All-told, about 50 people in- volved in the northern Willa- mette valley aviation club showed up for the gathering, some in ground vehicles but several by air in about 15 air- planes, many of which flew overhead in an impressive for- mation display. The gathering served as the club’s monthly meeting and featured a talk by Mike Seager about his homebuilt aircraft transition-training program. Seager was the first person certified by the FAA to provide flight training for builders of home-built aircraft. He also provides ferry and test pilot services, and says he’s “never had a hiccup” in more than 60 first flights of experimental air- craft. About half the group raised their hands in answer to a question of whether they’d been to Vernonia before. Sev- eral expressed interest in re- turning to take advantage of the camping opportunities on the bucolic grass strip. The only complaint heard: “It sure is bumpy!” RIVER CITY SPEEDWAY June 16 – Official Results Sportsman – Fast Time: 15.72 Jesse Freeman, Wilsonville. Trophy Dash: Chris West, Battleground. Banks council urged to learn from Vernonia’s hiring From page 13 be needed since Ed Clark gave the historical society quite a few artifacts from the Brown Derby. The group hopes to ro- tate the historical pieces every six-months. Community Action submitted a request to the City of Banks for a $500 donation to assist with delivering services to low- income residents of Banks. Last year, 99 requests from Banks households were re- sponded to and $19,173 in services was provided. Council agreed to the donation. Marion Steinbach, a citizen of Banks, appeared and sub- mitted a newspaper article from The INDEPENDENT to council regarding pending litigation in the City of Vernonia over their previous City Manager; she 503-429-0280 Basic Auto Repair Specializing in Brakes & Light Auto Repair Oil Change Special $19.95 most cars & trucks - up to 5 quarts Transmission service Rotor and Open Monday thru Friday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. drum machine Saturday & Sunday call for appointment on site 62481 Nehalem Hwy 47 North, next to Spartree Restaurant made a plea to council to be cautious in the hiring process.
