Officer Jeff Dalrymple Vernonia’s newest Police Of- ficer, Jeff Dalrymple, was sworn in. Dalrymple’s most recent job was as a reserve officer in Mil- waukie, though he has helped out in Vernonia at several Jam- borees in recent years. Council responses to Topics from the Floor are usually in- cluded in the next council meet- ing, not at the time the topic is brought up. Topics from the Floor included; • Scott Laird telling council that the Bicycle Skills Park proj- ect just received the news the project had received a $5,000 grant from Bikes Belong of Boulder, Colorado. • Pamela Cohen telling the council that she understood that one option for use of efflu- ent from the sewer upgrade was to put it in Vernonia Lake (see more information in her Letter to the Editor in this is- sue). Mayor Sally Harrison told Cohen that, “You have gotten a lot of misinformation,” and, “Af- ter going to one Public Works (PW) meeting, you are way be- hind on this.” Harrision went on to encourage Cohen, saying that being a member of the PW committee would be very help- ful to her. Clark McGaugh asked coun- cil which of them agreed or dis- agreed with the letter he re- ceived from City Administrator M.R. “Dick” Kline and asked that they let him know by next council meeting (information from the letter was included in the May 3 Opinion in The Inde- pendent). He went on to ex- press concern about the hiring process that was used to hire Kline, specifically that no other applicants were considered and that the standard full back- ground check had been can- celled by Mayor Harrison. No action was taken on a conditional use request to Co- lumbia County for a dog rescue facility on Airport Road. Parks Committee had recommended the city object to the use be- cause of potential problems at adjacent Airport Park. City Administrator Kline told council he knows the Learning Center has been a source of contention and that when he got here last July the city had not collected a penny of the $500,000 grant to build the Learning Center. Kline said that the city has received $492,000 and hopes to close the grant this year. Kline went on to say, “Jesse (Jones) is re- sponsible for that. Smith was seeking donations to help her as she enters the National American Miss Oregon Teen Pageant. Harrison said there were no city funds available for this, but that anyone wishing to donate could contact Shirlee Daughtry.
