Page 14 The INDEPENDENT, March 15, 2007 Banks school board will form committee to look at facility needs Banks first-graders Mary Short and Logan Storms read their stories to the Board of Di- rectors at their meeting March 12. Each page of their stories started with “When I was young in the town of Banks” and the kids filled in what they liked to do: ride bikes, eat pizza, draw, read. Elementary principal Bob Huston had invited them to showcase how well this year’s first graders are doing with liter- acy. Board chair Doug Nordholm reported that, during board work sessions, they have dis- cussed the findings of the facil- ities planning committee and wants the public to know what the board will do. At this time, he explained, because the dis- trict has needs that require fur- ther exploration, they will form a committee to look at those additional needs. The board voted to grant Su- perintendent Marv Ott a three- year contract that will run from July 1, 2007 to June 30 2010. They also discussed the evalu- ation process used to reach this decision. Ott is rated by the board on nine standards and six goals. Ott scored between good and excellent in all areas except leadership and district culture, where he scored be- tween needs improvement and good. Gary Hartman, director of technology and assessment for the district, said that the TESA computer system used for state testing is down and may not be usable for this year. This is be- cause of a contract dispute be- tween the Oregon Department of Education and the contractor responsible for the system. Director Will Moore opened discussion of moving the date or time of the school board meeting so it would not conflict with the high school PTO meet- ing. Board consensus was that they would like to hear from the PTO to see how necessary the change is and what can be done to accommodate them. The board will revisit this item next month. The board had a first reading of an updated job sharing poli- cy that would allow participants in a job share to accrue senior- ity at a pro-rated rate. The pre- vious practice had been that job share participants lost their seniority. The board also looked at policies regarding board member standards of conduct, conflicts and interest, and meeting procedure. These policies will be voted on next month. The 2007-08 school calen- dar was also presented for a first reading. Inservice days will be spaced evenly throughout the year, as they were in prior years.
