The INDEPENDENT, March 1, 2007 Uses for WGS basement found The Vernonia School District Board of Directors held a sec- ond public meeting in February, on February 22. The meeting was primarily a workshop to discuss goals and to cover OSBA (Oregon School Board Association) workshop materi- als. The only item on the agenda for a vote was acceptance of the NWRESD Local Service Plan, which was unanimously accepted. Superintendent Ken Cox presented a proposal to begin using the Washington Grade School basement more. Cox said that students will not be downstairs full-time and that no changes in usage will occur un- til an engineer looks over the premises and an air survey is done. Air quality tests in the 2004-05 school year came back within the range for safe air quality, but Cox wants to have the air quality checked more frequently, particularly if use is increased, though he has not yet checked on the cost of such testing. This was not on the agenda as a decision item, so no action was taken. Cox also told the board that a number of positions are still available on the budget com- mittee. This month’s column is by Superintendent Kenneth Cox. As I look out my window I see a beautiful sun- ny spring day. There was snow on the side of Highway 47 on my way into town, but I hope most of that is over for this school year. I did get a phone call about 5:00 a.m. this morning (Mon- day) from Rob Curl and we discussed the cur- rent status. My hat goes off to him and to Shel- ley Cota. On days when we are glad to be warm in our beds because the weather is bad outside, they are out checking road conditions well be- fore 4:00 a.m. This is not just dedication to a job but to the safety and protection of our children. I would also like to express my appreciation to all the staff of Curl Transportation who make sure that our students have a safe ride to school each day. I took the opportunity earlier in the WOEC announces scholarships are available High school students throughout the West Oregon Electric Cooperative service area are eligible to participate in two exciting scholarship op- portunities – the Sam Hearing Scholarship Fund and the Youth Energy Seminar (YES Camp). Seniors looking to further their education at any college, university, community college or trade school can apply for one of four $500 scholarships. The Sam Hearing Scholarship Fund provides these scholar- ships to any graduating high school senior who lives in a West Oregon Electric house- hold. The other scholarship op- portunity is for high school sophomores and juniors; stu- dents are invited to apply for one of two scholarships to at- tend the Youth Energy Semi- Page 11 nar. The “energy camp” will be held July 16-21, and will hone their leadership skills and chal- lenge their knowledge of ener- gy industry issues. Application forms are avail- able from high school coun- selors or at West Oregon Elec- tric. The deadline for receiving applications is April 16. Win- ners will be contacted by May 20. All applicants must reside in a home in the West Oregon Electric service territory. West Oregon Electric serves more than 4,100 electric cus- tomers in portions of Columbia, Clatsop, Yamhill, Tillamook and Washington Counties. I was im- pressed with their courtesy to other driv- ers on their routes, virtually every one of them pulled over at one point or another in their route to let people pass, and their rapport with the kids. I hope that you encourage your children to share their thanks with them on a daily basis. There are a few upcoming events for the Ver- nonia School District I would like to share with you. We are looking for Budget Committee mem- bers, this would be a fairly short time commit- ment, 3 or 4 meetings of about 2 hours each.
