The AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) report from the Ore- gon Department of Education based on federal guidelines, was distributed. The district was designated as “did not meet.” A district is designated as not meeting AYP if any indi- cator is determine to be ‘not met.’ In this case, the district did not meet the goal of 50 per- cent of students meeting the testing requirements in Eng- lish/Language Arts. The district was at 47.73 percent, not the 50 percent targeted. All other objectives received a rating of ‘met.’ Superintendent Ken Cox re- ported that there are four open positions on the Budget Com- mittee. People interested in serving on this committee can obtain information and an appli- cation at the district office. When the name change for Vernonia Middle School came up on the agenda, Randy Par- row told the board, “The family of Art Parrow would like to thank the board for the consid- eration of honoring our father by naming the middle school after him. We understand there are other individuals worthy of such an honor, and we respect any decision the school board makes.” The name change is still an item of discussion and no final decision has been made. During the superintendent’s report, Cox told that board that he has been approached with an idea for a wrestling building that would use no district funds, only volunteer and donated funds. He said he is still gather- ing information on the idea and will discuss it further at future meetings. The audit report for the dis- tricts budget was reviewed. The auditors found everything gen- erally in order, though they made three suggestions for procedural changes, which have been implemented. The next public meeting is a workshop scheduled for Febru- ary 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the dis- trict office. The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be March 8, starting at 6:00 p.m.
