The INDEPENDENT, June 15, 2006 Civil War topic of next Chautauqua William and Carla Colemen of Cold Comfort Productions will be in Vernonia on June 28 at the Vernonia Public Library. The Haunting War: An Amer- ican Tragedy Revisited is the ti- tle of the next Chautauqua presentation at the Vernonia Public Library on June 28, at 7:00 p.m. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., thrice wounded in the Civil War, wrote, “The generation that car- ried on the war has been set apart by its experience…in our youth our hearts were touched with fire.” For many nineteenth- century Americans, the intensi- ty of the Civil War left scars that remained long after the fever of battle had died away. Those who survived the horrific fight- ing and those who struggled on the forever-changed home front bore witness to the terrible cost of a nation at war with it- self. The Haunting War tells the stories of these men and women in a series of vignettes bound together by period and original music. Nationally recognized Civil War educators William and Carla Coleman of Cold Comfort Productions bring this program to Vernonia with sponsorship from the Oregon Council for the Humanities, the Friends of the Vernonia Library and the Li- brary Board. Meeting set for Tiffney to speak at Museum Talk day camp adults Vernonia Pioneer Museum school students at the time and June 27, at 7:00 p.m., is the date to mark on your calendar for the Echoing Evergreens Day Camp meeting for adult volunteers at Anderson Park. Learn what the camp is about, how you can volunteer, and prepare yourself for a won- derful week of outdoor fun. Bring ideas, new or old, to share with the group. They are looking for people with interest- ing hobbies, crafts, and talents who would enjoy sharing them with our communities’ youth. Mist Grade School students spent part of a day at the mu- seum and Vernonia Lake. On May 26, Pat Lloyd gave a talk to Vernonia students on the ge- ology of the area and showed them the museum’s rock col- lection. In early June, two sep- arate groups of VHS seniors visited; the video of the 1996 flood was especially interesting to them as they were grade remembered it well. The next Museum Talk will be presented Sunday, June 25 at 2:00 p.m., by Kathleen Tiffney. She will discuss the Lolley family (her parents) and their time in Vernonia. The museum’s summer schedule is now in effect, open 1-4:00 p.m. on Fridays, Satur- days, and Sundays with the ex- ception of June 18, which is Fa- thers’ Day. Perhaps I need less to keep me awake at night. Cats, dogs, wind, rain, late night car radios, etc. Funny, when it’s quiet how sounds travel. Of late I’ve found folk think I’m the answer person on what’s going on in town with the powers that be at City Hall - Huh? How come? I’ve been asked of late - Oh! Are they starting on the Senior Center? Answer, No. Well, they’ve bull- dozed the ruts and land at the lake? Answer, I think that’s the parking lot. Where’s the Senior Center? Answer, lost in the trees yet. What’s the burner base for if not the Senior Cen- ter? Answer, I believe it’s to be an information type building site. Oh, what are they doing with the big building at the lake? Answer, duh - Have you noticed the information plaque in front of it? Answer, no, I’ve not noticed it – but what are they doing on Bridge? Side- walks? or What? Answer, at present I think bicycle paths and then sidewalks after the bridge is replaced. Oh, when’s that going to happen? Please, City Planning Com- mission, write an article, put it on the front page of The Inde- pendent , let folks know what you are doing or keep me post- ed on all the correct answers to pass on.
