Howard was born and raised in Califor- nia and moved to Columbia County 11 years ago. She is married and has nine children and 18 grandchildren. She has worked for the State of Alaska’s Department of Military Affairs, for Boeing, for Burkett Photog- raphy in Vernonia, and as an aide in the Vernonia School District, helping an autistic child. Howard volunteers at the Vernonia Senior Center, for the Vernonia Christian Church and formerly volunteered at the women’s prison in Wilsonville. She enjoys quilting, knitting, crocheting, gardening, weeding and walking. Howard was nominated for the My Fair Lady court by the Vernonia Senior Center. The other princesses this year are Betty Bowers of Scap- poose, Del Dyer of Clatskanie, Trail Day activities at Buxton Trailhead Trail Day/State Parks Day will be celebrated June 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Buxton Trailhead of the Banks/ Vernonia Linear Trail. Still time to apply for 47J board vacancy Vernonia School District 47J is still taking applications to fill a vacancy on the school board, caused by Dick Brunsman’s resignation. Applicants must reside in the district for at least one year before being appointed and must be at least 18 years of age. The My Fair Lady pageant is held during the Columbia County Fair each year to rec- ognize senior women for their outstanding service to our com- munity. The Columbia River PUD organizes the pageant each year in conjunction with the Retired and Senior Volun- teer Program and Columbia River Fire and Rescue. Public can pick honorees for 50th Jamboree The Vernonia Jamboree Committee is seeking public in- put on selecting the Golden Pi- oneer, Grand Marshall and Cit- izen of the Year for 2006. Make your choice, write it down on paper and take it to Vernonia City Hall, 1001 Bridge St., put it in the box pro- vided by asking for Joann Glass at the front desk. Special Pull-out The Vernonia Cares 3M Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, May 20, didn’t draw a huge crowd, but was enjoyed by those who did participate.
