The INDEPENDENT, February 2, 2006 ODOT discusses Staley’s Junction Attendance was good at the ODOT public meeting held Jan- uary 26 on the planning process that will take eight months before work starts on improvements to Staley’s Junction to address significant safety concerns. Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) held a public meeting on January 26, in the Buxton Community Hall, to discuss the Staley’s Junction Improvement Project. ODOT Senior Planner Tim Wilson gave an overview of the project, telling the attendees that ODOT is in the planning phase for a new interchange at Staley’s Junction – the inter- section of U.S. 26 (Sunset Highway) and OR 47 in rural Washington County. ODOT has determined that the turning movement from OR 47 south- bound to U.S. 26 eastbound is a significant safety concern. Wilson went on to say that L.L. “Stub” Stewart State Park will increase traffic so plans are being developed to build a new grade-separated interchange to safely facilitate turning movements at Staley’s Junc- tion. The planning phase, includ- ing the development of the In- terchange Area Management Plan, is currently under way. This will determine access is- sues and create the context for the design. Design work should begin later this year with con- struction slated for 2009. Three additional public meetings are planned for com- munity input as ODOT works toward a final plan. ODOT is also looking for community members interested in serving on committees over the next 6- 8 months, while surveys, envi- ronmental studies, and con- ceptual plans are being devel- oped.
