ODOT discusses Staley’s Junction
Attendance was good at the ODOT public meeting held Jan-
uary 26 on the planning process that will take eight months
before work starts on improvements to Staley’s Junction to
address significant safety concerns.
Oregon Department of
Transportation (ODOT) held a
public meeting on January 26,
in the Buxton Community Hall,
to discuss the Staley’s Junction
Improvement Project.
ODOT Senior Planner Tim
Wilson gave an overview of the
project, telling the attendees
that ODOT is in the planning
phase for a new interchange at
Staley’s Junction – the inter-
section of U.S. 26 (Sunset
Highway) and OR 47 in rural
Washington County. ODOT has
determined that the turning
movement from OR 47 south-
bound to U.S. 26 eastbound is
a significant safety concern.
Wilson went on to say that
L.L. “Stub” Stewart State Park
will increase traffic so plans are
being developed to build a new
grade-separated interchange
to safely facilitate turning
movements at Staley’s Junc-
tion.
The planning phase, includ-
ing the development of the In-
terchange Area Management
Plan, is currently under way.
This will determine access is-
sues and create the context for
the design. Design work should
begin later this year with con-
struction slated for 2009.
Three additional public
meetings are planned for com-
munity input as ODOT works
toward a final plan. ODOT is
also looking for community
members interested in serving
on committees over the next 6-
8 months, while surveys, envi-
ronmental studies, and con-
ceptual plans are being devel-
oped.

have not yet been scheduled,
but people interested in work-
ing with ODOT on the project

Banks Public Library has added some new
books to our youth collection. In our juvenile sec-
tion we have:
Chicken Boy by Frances O’Roark Dowell. To-
bin McCauley’s got a near-certifiable grandmoth-
er, a pack of juvenile-delinquent siblings, and a
dad who’s not going to win father of the year any
time soon. To top it off, Tobin’s only friend truly
believes that the study of chickens will
reveal…the meaning of life? Getting through
seventh grade isn’t easy for anyone, but when
the first day of school starts out with your
granny’s arrest, you know you’ve got real prob-
lems. Throw on a five-day suspension (for de-
fending your English teacher’s honor), a chicken
that lays green eggs, and a family feud that’s
tearing everyone to pieces, and you’re in for one
heck of a ride.
The Misadventures of Maude March by Au-
drey Couloumbis. Eleven-year-old Sallie March
is a whip-smart tomboy and voracious reader of
Western adventure novels. When she and lady-
like older sister Maude are orphaned for the sec-
ond time, they decide to take matters into their
own hands and escape their self-serving
guardians for the wilds of the frontier and an ad-
venture the likes of which Sallie has only read
about.
This time, however, the “wanted woman” isn’t
a dime-novel villain, it’s Sallie’s very own sister!
And while life on the run has its perks – not hav-
ing to wear a dress, for starters – pretty soon the
horse thieving and bank robbing and bandits are
more than even Sallie bargained for.
Our newest addition to the Young Adult sec-
tion is:
Ptolemy’s Gate by Jonathan Stroud. In this
glorious conclusion to the Bartimaeus Trilogy,
the destinies of Bartimaeus, Nathaniel and Kitty
converge once more. For the first time, we will
learn the secrets of Bartimaeus’s past, and catch
a glimpse into the mysterious Other Place – the
world of demons – as together, the threesome
faces treacherous magicians, a complex con-
spiracy, and a rebellious faction of demons. To
survive, they must test the limits of this world and
question the deepest parts of themselves. And
most difficult of all – they will have to learn to
trust one another.
