The INDEPENDENT, April 7, 2005 Page 9 Bits & Bites By Jacqueline Ramsay Shoppers at the annual Vernonia Library Book Sale on March 19 came away with great deals, as all books were $.25 each. Here’s one for y o u . Vacuum ing the o th e r day the w o rd e g re g io u s popped into my head. I studied it in my mind, while sweeping the bedroom, the hall, my sewing room and the rest of the hall. I finally had to stop and go to the dictionary. Of course, I couldn’t find it. I didn’t know how to spell it, let alone what it meant, so I called Audeen. She knew how to spell it and what it meant. Sure nice to have such folk to call. Look it up, maybe you’ve bumped into it and didn’t know it. Ah, Spring - enough said - we need the rain. Have you ever been thrilled to the core by what you’ve seen as you travel the highway? Last Friday was such a day for me while going to Camp 18 and beyond. I was tooling along at 53-55 mph like a good girl. I know I had about 18 cars stacked up behind me - waiting for the passing lane. As I passed the rest area, I passed four leather clad bikers on the side of the road, didn’t think anything of it - but up ahead I see two sets of flashing red and blue lights. Oh, oh, my heart said. Two cars each with their own personal policeman on a motorcycle. Then it dawned on me who I had passed. Well, guess what? I was on the high way alone for better than six minutes before any of my fellow travelers snuck up behind me. The six gents must have stopped the whole line. Chuck le, chuckle. I’m sorry I missed the Coun cil meeting on March 21 but the program at the Library was well worth my time. Other Library offerings: April 8 at 7:00 p.m., topic - Demystifying Intelligence (CIA, etc.) with Emily Francona. April 11 at 3:30 p.m. - Mary Esther Hart of Hart’s Reptiles - reptiles, reptiles, that I will miss, OH yes. Did you miss your state reps and Ron Wyden at the Senior Center on Monday, April 28? Mr. Wyden had some interest ing information. Keep your check books in your pocket to ail the “Please join us” letters you get from all the drives, campaigns and we need your support letters you get from government committees. Don’t leave tax returns in your mailbox Mail thieves know that this is the time of year when tax re turns, going or coming, may be in the mail. Thieves typically steal mail to use in making false ID or they steal it to sell to other identity thieves. There has been at least one report of mail theft when a resi dent placed his tax return in an Evening Chat to teach breast exam technique On Monday, April 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Amy Camburn, RN, MS, OCN, Tuality’s breast health coordinator, will show how to perform breast self exam correctly using tactually accurate breast models. Unfortunately, a thief got there first and took off with a lot of personal information. Mail theft is a crime of oppor tunity, so don’t make it easy for the thieves. Here are a few re minders: • Whenever possible take your outgoing mail to the post office or postal service drop box. • Secure your mail in a locked mail box. • Never send cash in the mail. • Never have blank checks mailed to your home, pick them up at the bank. • If you’re expecting mail containing sensitive informa tion, ask a trusted neighbor to retrieve it for you immediately upon delivery. >4 '4* Custom Sewing & Alterations Wed - Sat 1 0a m -6p m Mon - The By Appointment Pick & Delivery Service Available 503-706-8400 61462 Stoney Point Rd.,Vernonia Drama Troupe on tour in area The University Players, an eight-person touring drama troupe from George Fox Uni versity in Newberg, will be per forming Sunday, April 17, at 10:00 a.m. at the Nehalem Val ley Community Church.
