Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. GILBERT GEORGE HOWELL Gilbert George Vandehey Howell, 76, Hillsboro, died March 13, 2005. Fu neral services were held March 19 at Fir Lawn Mortuary, followed by inter ment in Fir Lawn Memorial Park. Mr. Howell was born March 31, 1928, in Kansas City, to Pius L. and Edith E. Zimmerman Vandehey. As a boy, he adopted his step-father’s last name of Howell. He graduated from Hillsboro High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and attended Pacific Univer sity from 1946 to 1948. He had been married to Beverly Davis and Suzanne before marrying Deborha Steffen in 1993. He had owned a walnut orchard, worked as an accountant for Armour Meat Company and owned and operated Leo’s Lair in Cornelius until 1995. He was preceded in death by a son, George; a brother, Theodore Vandehey and a sister, Mary Ann Martinez. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William of Newberg and Rick of Banks; one brother, Vernon Vandehey of Hills boro; four grandchildren; a great-grand son; nieces and a nephew. MAURICE JOHN MEEUWSEN Maurice “Morris” John Meeuwsen, 84, Roy, died March 22, 2005 Recita tion of the rosary and a funeral mass were celebrated March 29 at St. Fran cis of Assisi Catholic Church. Interment was at St. Francis Cemetery. Mr. Meeuwsen was born September 3, 1920, in Roy, to William and Mary Vanderzanden Meeuwsen. He was raised in Roy and graduated from St. Francis School. In 1954, he married Mary K. Tolan. He owned and operated Maurice Meeuwsen Construction Company until / D irect \ 1958. He took over the family farm and raised grain and strawberries and worked as a crane operator for Zidell Industries and Willamette Iron Steel for 22 years, retiring in1986. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Meeuwsen; two brothers, Norbert and Stanley; and a sister, Lena Meeuwsen. Survivors include his wife; six sons, Neil J. of Hillsboro, Earl F. of Forest Grove, Robert P. of Banks, Peter J. of Carlton, Gordon A. and Keith D., both of Roy; three daughters, Barbara J. Ewing and Maureen G. Herb, both of Banks, and Susan G. Lewis of Forest Grove; four brothers, Ralph of Hills boro, Harold, Vern, and Lyle, all of For est Grove; a sister, Clara Kindel of Yamhill; 24 grandchildren; nieces and nephews. KIT FRANCES MURPHY Kit Frances Murphy, 60, Hillsboro, died March 23, 2005. Memorial servic es were held April 3 at the United Methodist Church in Hillsboro. Crema tion has taken place. Ms. Murphy was born December 30, 1944, in Portland, to Kenneth and Jean Freeburg Murphy. She graduated from Madison High School in 1962. She married Tony Blackburn who died after 16 years of marriage. She lat er married Bruce Edgerton. She was a homemaker, owned and operated a contracting business with her husband, and worked at the City of Hillsboro until she retired in the early 1990s due to health issues. Survivors include one son, Evan Edgerton of Durham; two daughters, Tiffiny Gooding of Banks and Keeli Miller of Scappoose; her mother of For est Grove; a sister; Pam Warner of Durham; four grandchildren; and a nephew. LEONARD “LARRY” LEE PRATT Leonard “Larry” Lee Pratt, 78, Casa Grande, Arizona, died March 19, 2005. Funeral services were held March 28 at Fuiten, Rose and Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove. Interment with full mil itary honors was in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. Pratt was born December 9, 1926, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Charles and Lillian Alexander Pratt. As a boy, he moved with his family to Banks, where he was raised. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later in the U.S. Coast Guard. He retired in 1968 after 25 years of service. In 1946, he married Faye Warren. In 1951, he married Helen Thomas. They made their home in Hillsboro after his retirement. He operated service sta tions in Hillsboro and Forest Grove and was a bus driver for Hillsboro School District. His wife died in 1993. In 1994, he married June Sexton. They made their home in San Felipe, Mexico until moving to Casa Grande He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry W. and David G. “Gary”, both of Memphis, Tennessee, and Per ry of Forest Grove; three daughters, Jerry L Walker of Washougal, Washing ton, Merry Briscoe of Hillsboro, and Ter ry Gouviea of Stayton; two step-daugh ters, Sandy McGahan of Arizona City, Ariz., and Susie Sexton of Antioch, Calif.; a sister, Lorraine Chase of McMinnville; grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Services were held April 6 at Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Fu neral Home in Forest Grove, followed by graveside services and interment at Buxton Cemetery with her great-grand son, Mr. Scott Dahlman, of the Good Shepherd Church in Gresham, officiat ing. Mrs. Vandehey was born October 11, 1915, in Buxton, to Jesse and Ethel Meyers. She graduated from Banks High School in 1933. In 1932, she married Fred Benefiel. They made their home in Manning. He died in 1978. She married Glenn William Vandehey in 1991. They made their home in Banks. She worked in several industries, but most of the time was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband and two grandsons. Survivors include two sons, Richard J Benefiel of Portland and Fred J. Benefiel of Banks; two daughters, Judy L. Dreith of Granbury, Texas, and Joyce E. Mace of Wenatchee, Washington; 15 grandchildren, and 18 great-grand children. Remembrances are suggested to the Forest Grove Senior Service Cen ter, P.O. A celebration of life was held April 2 at the Vernonia Li brary with her brother-in-law, Mr. Jack Peterson, officiating. Mrs. Vorce was born February 8, 1950, in Portland, to Robert and Ruby (Axness) Headrick. She was raised in the Garden Home District of Portland. She moved to Vernonia in 1983. In 1990, she married Jerry R. Vorce. They made their home in Vernonia. She worked as a secretary for General Telephone Company in Cornelius for 13 years and later worked in the bar at Crabtree’s Pub & Deli for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband; two brothers, Bob Headrick of Buxton and Jim Headrick of Carver; two nieces. Remembrances are suggested to the Julie A.
