The INDEPENDENT, March 17, 2005 Easter Cantata March 25 and 26 The Vernonia Community Choir will perform the Easter Cantata at a different location this year, and it will be differ ent from the Cantatas they have done the last several years. Because of starting prac tice later than usual, the pres entation has had to be simpli fied. They won’t be using the beautiful sets and costumes this year, but it will still be a wonderful presentation of Easter Music. “Were It Not For Grace” is this year's presentation - a blend of new songs and old standards. The musical was created by Rob Howard and Bruce Cokeroft; arranged by David Hamilton, Robert Ster ling and Gary Rhoads. Because of new flooring in the grade school gym, the Easter presentation is moving to the First Baptist Church on the corner of A Street and Washington Avenue. There will be three perform ances; one on Friday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m., and two on Saturday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Special Easter activities scheduled by Vernonia Community Church The Vernonia Community Church will offer some special activities for Easter. On Good Friday at 7:00 p.m., there will be a showing of the film “The Passion,” at the church, 957 State Avenue. On Easter Sunday, the com munity is invited to the Ceme tery for a Sunrise Service, fol lowed by breakfast at the church from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. and then a Worship Service at 9:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join these activities. Easter Egg Hunt will be March 26 The annual Vernonia Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Vernonia Chamber of Com merce, will be held at Hawkins Park on Saturday, March 26, at 10:00 a.m. The Hunt is divided by age groups for children up to 12 years old. Vernonia Sentry is providing the eggs that will be cooked and dyed by volun teers. Leonetti’s Pizza is pro viding pizza gift certificates; other treats will be supplied by the Chamber. MEMBER PROFILE: Bill James, our Senior Center President, and his wife Elaine, are both welcome assets to the operation of this center. Bill and Elaine moved here six years ago from Redonna Beach, Ore gon. Bill is retired from Tektron ix since 1986. Bill was born in Forest Grove and Elaine in Hillsboro, they both graduated from Hillsboro High School, and were married at the Methodist Church in Hillsboro on October 22, 1949. They have three children, son Bill Jr. in Las Vegas; daughters Jerilyn Ann and Valerie Lynne and be tween them they have given Bill and Elaine four grandchildren. The grandchildren are involved in our local high school’s equestrian team with honors! Beside Bill’s high profile in volvement with our local Lions Club, Bill’s past hobby included a fishing boat at Garibaldi for 20 years (He was surprised to learn my husband and I also had a boat moored there in the 70s.). Elaine fished and hunted with Bill but now is content to do gardening, crossword puz zles and crocheting, instead of traipsing through the brush lug ging deer and rifles. Also I am happy to report Elaine is a whiz on the comput er and has been a huge help here in recordkeeping. So, A BIG THANK YOU to both Bill and Elaine, Senior Center ap preciated volunteers. In conclusion I’d like all my readers to know that even my bird dog couldn’t flush out the seven pink birds in our front yard last week. Thank you to whoever sent the Boy Scout fundraiser’s spe cial flamingoes our way.
