The INDEPENDENT, May 6, 2004 Page 25 Obituary MELVIN RAY DAVIES Melvin Ray Davies, 63, Forest Grove, died April 12, 2004. A memorial service was held at the Portland Mennonite Church. Mr. Davies was born December 24, 1940, in Forest Grove, to Alfred M. and Shirley F. (Bigler) Davies. He was raised in Banks and graduated from Banks High School in 1959. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. In 1963, he married Linda Diane Chamberlin. They made their home in Cornelius before moving to Forest Grove in 1968. He worked in a number of jobs before retiring from Coast Cutlery Company, last December. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Andrew of San Diego, Calif., and Robert of Forest Grove; three daugh- ters, Debra Dorman and Kathleen Appleberry, both of Forest Grove, Heidi Washburn of Salem; a brother, Bruce of Port Alsworth, Alaska; two sisters, Janice Muckendorfer of Hillsboro, and Frances Ruff of Netarts; two grandchil- dren; nieces and nephews. MICHAEL PATRICK EPLING Michael Patrick Epling, 45, Portland, died April 18, 2004. A mass and rosary were dedicated to him at St. Agatha’s on April 20. Family services were held April 23. Mr. Epling was born July 7, 1958, in Portland, to Donald and Etta Epling. He graduated from LaSalle High School and attended Portland Community College. He lived for a while in LaPine. He was a member of the Oregon National Guard. He lived in Mist from 1996 to 2000, where he worked on the Mist gas line. He also worked in con- struction, carpentry and fiber optics. Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Kelly Ann Pendell of Portland, Kristi Lea Miller of Troutdale; a nephew, Keith Pendell of St. Helens; a niece, Dawn Pendell of St. Helens; aunts, uncles and cousins. Remembrances are suggested to the Humane Society. Wilhelm and Willamette National were in charge of arrangements. VESTA MARIE KING Vesta Marie King, 79, Forest Grove, died April 16, 2004. Graveside services were held April 21 at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor Grant Williams, of the Vernonia Community Church, officiating. Mrs. King was born January 22, 1925, in Vernonia, to Vester and Helen (Andersen) Christensen. She graduat- ed from Vernonia High School in 1943. In 1951, she married Robert King. They made their home in Vernonia until moving to Forest Grove in 1996. She worked at Commercial Bank, which became U.S. National Bank, until retir- ing in 1982. She was preceded in death by her husband; her twin sister, Lesta Peppard and another sister, Arvelia Robertson. Survivors include a brother, Ernie Christensen, and an aunt, Dorena Ridling, both of Vernonia; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held May 3 at the Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home, with Mr. Roy Frank officiating. Interment was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mr. Frank was born December 25, 1933, in Garibaldi, to Elgus P. and Virginia E. (Whitsell) Frank. When he was three, the family moved to Vernonia. He graduated from Vernonia High School in 1952 and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. In 1955, he married Lora Allene Jackson. They made their home in Spokane, Vernonia, Moses Lake, Wash., Klamath Falls, Portland and Hermiston, then moved to Forest Grove in 1995. After the Air Force, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad for 33 years, retiring in 1995. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lori Frank of Forest Grove, and Ellen Kay of Spirit Lake, Idaho; two brothers, Jack of Prineville, and Dick of Italy; two grandchildren. Remembrances are suggested to RICHARD JOHN GRADY Richard John “Rick” Grady, 36, Vernonia, died April 24, 2004. Graveside services were held April 28 at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with Pastor Grant Williams, of the Vernonia Community Church, officiating. Mr. Grady was born July 28, 1967, in Hillsboro, to Mike and Ilene (Norquist) Grady. He was raised in Vernonia, graduating from Vernonia High School in 1985. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. He worked as a welder and as a logger. He was preceded in death by one brother, Steve. Survivors include his parents; a son, Logan and a daughter, Stephanie, both of Hillsboro; three brothers, Stewart of Vernonia, Scott of Eugene, and Tim of Scappoose; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. DANIEL DEAN MALLORY Daniel Dean “Bumpa” Mallory, 80, Direct Cremation $ 475 Hillsboro, died April 17, 2004. Funeral services were held April 23 in Hillsboro. Final committal was at Valley Memorial Park in Hillsboro. Mr. Mallory was born December 29, 1923, in Austin, Minnesota, to Dean and Frances Mallory. He sparred with Joe Lewis during his military service. In 1947, he moved to Oregon. He worked as a builder and contractor until retiring in 1985. Survivors include four sons, Daniel, Michael and Dennis, all of Hillsboro, and Bruce of Banks; two daughters, Sharon Steelman of John Day, Diana Page of Beaverton; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Donelson, Sewell and Mathews was in charge of arrangements. WALTER CLARENCE MATHEWS Walter Clarence Mathews, 93, Clatskanie, died April 28, 2004. Services were held May 3 at the Mist School gym, with Rev. Wes Schlenker, of the Community Church of Christ in Longview, officiating. Mr. Mathews was born March 24, 1911, on the Burn, near Mist, to Lucius Plin and Bessie Alice-Dayton (Upson) Mathews. He was raised in Mist and attended Vernonia High School. In 1941, he married Grace Elizabeth Condit. He and his four broth- ers were in logging and saw milling. In 1948, he and Grace owned the Mist Store for five years. He worked in a sawmill near Mist for over 18 years. He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Robert, George and Martin; one sister, Marjorie Farnsworth. Survivors include a daughter, Marian Clark of Iowa City, Iowa; a fos- ter daughter, Judy Bjornson-Carder of Burley Idaho; a brother, Stanley of Mist; two sisters, Virginia Mathews and Betteen Wright, both of Mist; five foster grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A celebration of life was held April 17 at the First Christian Church in Silverton. Mr. Sargent was born April 17, 1955, in Frankfort, Indiana. He spent his childhood in Vernonia, then moved to San Jose, California, where he grad- uated from high school and San Jose Christian College. In 1977, he married Kathy Cecil. They made their home in Grass Valley, Calif., before moving to Silverton in 1993. He worked as a forest fire fighter, in the building trades and was in the Air Force from 1982 until 1988. He was preceded in death by a 24 Hr. Service Honoring all pre-planned funeral arrangements ELMA INDIA WARD Elma India Ward, 90, Buxton, died April 27, 2004. Services were held. Mrs. Ward was born August 14, 1913, in Berryville, Arkansas, to Louis Leo and Nancy Emmaline (Smith) Dick. When she was five, the family moved by covered wagon to Colcord, Oklahoma, where she was educated. In 1936, she married Homer Franklyn Ward. They moved to Cove Orchard in 1937 and to Oakridge in 1950. In 1998, she moved to Coos Bay, then to Buxton in 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Dale and Jim Dick; two sisters, Toy Youngblood and Dimple Byrd. Survivors include a son, Homer F. “Frank”, Jr. of Eastside; a brother, Sammy Joe of Maysville, Arkansas; two sisters, Violet Loftis of Eugene, and Gladdean Lardy of Buxton; four grand- children; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was raised in Banks until moving to Forest Grove where she graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1957. In 1957, she married Arthur Duane Vaandering. They made their home in Forest Grove. He passed away in 1967. She married Derrel Rose in 1968, they made their home in Forest Grove until moving to Banks in 2002. Mrs. Rose worked at a number of jobs, including Tektronix, before she and her husband purchased the Fuiten Mortuary Chapels in Forest Grove and Vernonia in 1984. They retired in 1992. She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Doug Davis. Survivors include two sons, Derrel J., Jr. of Hillsboro, Art of Banks; four daughters, Del Davis of Aloha, Tina Reynolds, Debbie Hoyt, and Tammy Rose-Wright, all of Forest Grove; a brother, Marvin of Portland; 13 grand- children; nieces.
