Page 24 The INDEPENDENT, May 6, 2004 Letters, cont. from page 23 Thanks to all for help with first River Fest To the Editor: The Vernonia River Fest would like to thank all of the volunteers, vendors, Metro West Transportation, Country Market, Oregon Fish & Wildlife, Sheriff’s Posse, sponsors, non- profits, and businesses for be- ing a part of a successful event. Our estimates were that 500 – 700 people attended the event, giving them an opportunity to see our City, parks, shops, and friendly people. A follow-up meeting will be on May 12, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the fine-tuning of future events. Truly yours, Mark Hall Vernonia River Fest Committee WEATHER REPORT IT/Earth Day program. Again, thanks to all of you. It is be- cause of you that this program is a success. Vernonia Pride is always looking for volunteers. We cur- rently are in need of a secre- tary. Meetings are held at 1:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at City Hall. Please join us. Our next project will be fundraising for the 4th of July fireworks. We have completed the bears and coyotes that will go on the downtown city lamp posts. They are gorgeous!!! We must wait to put them out until ODOT has finished its down- town street project. This should be about June, so watch for those to go up. Donna Webb Vernonia Pride Adopt-a-Soldier time A great clean-up day, extended into June on to the next project To the Editor: To the Editor: What a perfect day for being outdoors. The weather was beautiful and 110 people showed up to clean our town. It is truly inspirational to see peo- ple come together because they really care about the town they live in. It is amazing what can get done with lots of peo- ple, from young children to old- er adults, we had it all. We would like to thank everyone who helped with food preparation to feed all these hungry workers. Gretchen Lin- dauer did a great job in plan- ning food preparation. Katie Peotter did a great job soliciting food. Thanks to Sentry, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Frito-Lay and Franz for donating the food items. Thanks to Booster club for use of BBQ. We spread barkdust, did yard work at Museum, cleaned up Linear Trail, weeded at Hawkins Park, spread wood chips on OA Hill, planted trees at lake, picked up litter through town and much more. Thanks to Waste Manage- ment for use of 20 yard dump- ster. Thanks to City of Vernonia and its employees for working and supplying materials for event. A special thanks to SOLV for the support financial- ly and in planning. This event was put on in conjunction with SOLV under their SOLV Thank you first of all to those who have helped our “Adopt-a- Soldier” program. Kinnell Steward Cub Scout Pack 201 Rally co-driver says thanks for experience To the Editor: I wanted to drop a quick note to the people of Vernonia to say thank you from myself and the Performance Rally community. Being originally from a small town in Iowa myself, I know how much a small community puts itself out there to host an event such as the one you so graciously opened yourselves up to on the Rally weekend. Being my team's first rally, I am very glad we could base our service crew in your town. I know my crew enjoyed the grassy area at the school and your local shops. It was also uplifting to drive around in the race car and to see the children and families wave at us. It made us feel quite at home. My only wish was that as a co-driv- er I had had more time to visit the businesses and talk with the residents more myself. I did get to see quite a lot of the local country side between stages and service. What a great part of the country. We are all very grateful to the Vernonia community and surround areas for opening their lives to us for a couple short days and hope that we can all do it again next year! A grateful “tourist”, Terry Woltman Lynwood, WA Volunteers again make it a great Egg Hunt To the Editor: We couldn’t have asked for better weather at this year’s Easter Egg Hunt. Our bunny helpers did a fine job of boiling, coloring and hiding eggs. Ver- nonia Sentry donated the 120 dozen eggs and food coloring. I would like to thank Mario Leonetti for the pizza and 2-fers coupons. He always calls us to contribute something for the kids. West Oregon Electric, Janean Zavales of Napa Auto Parts, True Value Hardware, Keenon Land Services, Robyn Bassett of Vernonia Public Works, Ore- gon Coast Flowers, Amanda and D’lisa Watts and family, we appreciate your donations that helped make the hunt fun and successful. Weren’t those farm animals a hit? I hope you all got to see the baby goats. They were so cute! The Chamber of Commerce thanks everyone who pur- chased a bouquet of Calla Lil- lies, and those who made a cash donation. The bouquet I bought is just beautiful. The proceeds from the sales went to pay for the candy the Bunny handed out. We had a big turn out, and Vernonia Ambulance stayed throughout the whole event. Sincerely, Dolly Keenon Vernonia Chamber of Commerce Donkey Basketball filled gym with fun To the Editor: Thanks to many people, the Donkey Basketball game filled the gym and provided a fun filled evening for all ages. Both the ball game and the taco feed for Zack Rumbolz were financially successful. We wish to thank the follow- ing people who volunteered to ride the donkeys. The teams were The Volunteer Fire Dept. Association, high school girls equestrian club, school em- ployees and the people who made up the city team. Also, Tim Titus, who made a terrific clown; emcees Randy Parrow and Mr. Shannon; pooper scoopers Jerry Cropp and Bill James; cheerleaders Tony Hyde, Scott Rethwill, Luke Enneberg and Paul John- son; scoreboard operator Karen Roberts; camera crew Bud Normand and Adam Buck- an; custodian Brent Eagleston, who was stuck working instead of being one of the cheerlead- ers. A special thanks to The Inde- pendent for the advertisement they provided.
