The subject of police/com - m unity interaction received a lot of attention, w ith sug ges tions ranging from m ore police involvem ent in com m unity a c tivities, to an occasional O pen H ouse at the po lice d e p a rt m ent, to o rg a n iz in g p o lic e boosters to help raise funds for the departm ent. By far the greatest concern, however, w as the need to d e velop m uch better com m un ica tions betw een the police d e partm ent and the com m unity, w ith the goal of increasing un derstanding in both directions. S uggestions included a link to the police d e partm en t from the city w eb site; a d e partm en t con tact fo r qu estions by e-m ail; a regular colum n in The IN D E P E N D E N T by either the chief o r his d e s ig n e e ; a b u lle tin board in C ity Hall; a w ay fo r c it izens to ask questions (a n o n y m ously, w hen necessary) and get answ ers; a suggestion box at C ity Hall; a liaison to listen to com plaints and refer the m to the a p p ro p ria te resource; and m o nthly pre se n ta tio n s by the p o lice d e p a rtm e n t in va rio u s venues. O th e r s u g g e stio n s included m ore w alking pa trols, m ore c iti zen in vo lve m en t, clarifica tion of ord in a n ce s/la w s, developm ent of a list of volunteers w ho w ill take people hom e from bars w hen necessary.
