James, her husband, Da mon, and seven-year-old son, Ian, have been residents of Vernonia for the past three years. Banks branch will hold Open House The Banks branch of US Bank is inviting the community to an open house on Tuesday, July 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be popcorn, hot dogs, drinks, movies, prizes, kids’ activities and more, espe cially fun. “Come meet the staff and join the fun,” urged Manager Pam Walther. The bank is located at the corner of S. Main Street (Hwy. 47) and Oak Way. Western Auto gone True Value is here As Western Auto stores un dergo changes on a nationwide basis, the Vernonia associate store, owned and operated for the past 34 years by Arnie and Mary Tolonen, has been phased out - but only as W est ern Auto. The Tolonen family is still op erating the store, at 834 Bridge Street, and son Craig has be come a valuable part of the or ganization, too. Western Auto is gone, but the new True Value sign will probably be up by the time you read this. The only problem now, will be remembering to put the correct name on our checks when we pay our bills! Forest workshop will emphasize improved roads A two-day Forest Roads Workshop will be held in sever al Oregon communities to help family forestland owners as sess their forest roads. The road assessment process will help determine if they can im prove water quality or fish habi tat. Similar voluntary measures were undertaken by the forest industry several years ago, making a significant difference. The workshop is also appro priate for road and logging con tractors, foresters, watershed council employees, volunteers and others interested in forest roads. Participants will learn how road systems can be im proved to better meet forest management goals in a cost-ef fective manner. Day one of the two-day workshop will be a classroom session that describes the im- portance of quality habitat, how to assess existing roads for problems, how to maintain and improve forest roads and how to develop contracts for project work. Advice will also be pro vided on how to locate techni cal and financial assistance that is available to small wood land owners. An optional evening session - “Case Stud ies from Local Landowners” - will also be offered. Day two will be an all-day field session that consists of a hands-on exercises to assess an existing road and discuss maintenance and improvement options with the participants. Information about easements and road use issues may also be discussed. The fee to attend a work shop is $50 per participant. It includes notebook and materi- als, lunch, and transportation to the field site. Helping hands needed for 4-mile scheduled B-V Trail sprucing-up Saturday, July 19th, will be the next Vernonia Chamber of Commerce clean up day on the Banks-Vernonia Trail. Chamber members and oth er volunteers will meet at 9:00 a.m. at Anderson Park, to coor dinate assignments before go ing out to spruce up four miles of trail, heading south from An derson Park. There is also ivy that needs to be pulled from trees within the city limits. Tools needed include flat- A bladed shovels, rakes, weed whackers, etc. A wheelbarrow may be handy, also, to collect trash bags and debris for dis posal. Wearing comfortable, sturdy gloves keeps hands comfortable. The chamber will provide trash bags and bottled water.
